The Hi Power GP Competition was a variant of the legendary Browning Hi Power and was imported during the mid to late ’80s. This model featured a refined trigger, adjustable sights, as well as a barrel mounted counterweight (you can see in the above photo). It’s all very functional but does appear a bit strange at first glance.

In order to extend the sight radius further, the GP Comp used the counterweight as the mounting point for the front sight.  While this does give the gun a giant 7.56″ sight radius, it does open door to potential problems.  As this counterweight was secured by an Allen screw, you’d better hope you remembered to apply the correct type and color Loctite.

The Hi Power GP competition seems a gun I would love to own but would be reluctant to shoot.  The Browning Hi Power has always had a sort of cult following, and it’s a shame these didn’t become as popular as the 1911/2011 series firearms.  Maybe I’m mistaken though, and there’s a reason these aren’t as popular.  So is it worth it for the price?  As always I leave it up to you, the reader, to decide.
