Torture Testing an Expensive 1911: How Does the Alchemy .45 Do?

Brannon LeBouef of NOLATAC and the St Bernard Indoor Shooting Center reports back after 6 months and over 1000 rounds with the Alchemy Custom Weaponry “ Brimstone” 1911 from Cabot Guns, in 45 ACP, in the Concealed Carry Officer size. This is a high-end custom 1911 handcrafted by a single gunsmith. This gun is flat out sexy! NOT being a “1911 guy”, this gun won Brannon over. With an MSRP of around $2500, this is a “gentleman’s gun” that can also be a workhorse when she needs to get her hands dirty.

This gun performed with 100% reliability through various formal courses, range sessions, multiple weights and brands of ammo, and multiple brands of magazines. Brannon experienced reliable feeding, superb accuracy, and an unbelievable trigger.

All in all, this gun is a winner for the guy who likes to always have “nice things” and values the more tangible aspects of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Between the aesthetics and performance, this gun pretty much broke the mold when it comes to 1911 reliability with higher round counts between cleanings.

Excellent review, I really enjoyed it. I have admired Rob's custom work since the very early days. With regards to the review, I can relate - I've owned a bunch of Wilson Combat 1911's (presently have a few), Ed Brown, Les Baer, Nighthawk, and Springfield Custom as well (including their full house custom guns, back when they were a real custom shop). I CCW a Springfield Professional in the winter, and I've done training courses with it. There are definitely disadvantages to the platform, even with something as proven and high end as the Pro, but carrying it just feels fantastic. I think an HK45 Compact is a superior carry gun, but you lose them feels. Every shooter should own a good 1911, and if you enjoy the 1911, you should treat yourself to a really nice one at some point. There is no real advantage on paper as... you know... a weapon. However, a nice 1911 is a thing to behold, artwork you can shoot, made by your fellow Americans well versed in ancient arts that our grandfathers possessed, of a time when we were back to back World War champs, and that feels fantastic.
