Is shooting a carbine round out of a carbine at pistol ranges a fair test? Would the round perform better at 50 or 100 yards? Just curious. I think you're right about this being a hunting round, which might be a good reason to test it at longer ranges. (I know you run these tests as defensive round tests, but why pass up a chance to do more shooting?)

As usual, an interesting test and a well-made video.

As a hunting round that would be used on medium game the penetration would possibly be less. A deer's rib would slow it down and start expansion earlier, think. Paul Harrell's 'Meat Target' would be a better test than bare gel. It appears that this combination of the Hornady FTX ammunition and a sixteen or eighteen inch barrel would be a very effective deer gun out to 100 yards o a bit more. Solid-top rifles with low power scopes attached would help with shot placement. Think Marlin 1894 or Ruger 77/357.

@Jim22 I was just thinking that same thing regarding the meat target. Also, I wonder if it's fragmenting on entry so much because the round is impacting the gel slightly above its optimal expansion speed. At what range would the penetration depth begin to decline?
