At the annual NRA Show weeks ago Savage Arms introduced a couple new AR-15 rifles into the fold of their MSR 15 line. One of the newest iterations is the MSR 15 Long Range rifle in .224 Valkyrie. While easily falling into Savage Arms‘ line of the MSR 15, this new model still has unique attributes that should hopefully differentiate itself from other competitors on the market. We will dive in and see if this is something tempting enough for you to try and locate your wallet, or just leave this gun hanging on store shelves.

The Savage Arms MSR 15 Long Range chambered in .224 Valkyrie is looking to cash in on the exploding popularity of the .224 Valkyrie cartridge with long range shooters and accuracy junkies. This rifle is not aiming for the entry-level or even mid-line consumer either. At an MSRP of $1,849 Savage Arms is diving all in on quality and premium features. The laundry list of components and installed parts can be read below:

  • 22″ Stainless, Type 3 Hard Anodized Savage Barrel
  • 6-Groove Rifling w/ 1:7″ Right-Hand Twist
  • 2-Stage Trigger: 1st Stage 2.5 Lbs / 2nd Stage 4 Lbs
  • Magpul PRS Gen 3 Adjustable Stock
  • Nickel-Boron Bolt Carrier Group (BCG)
  • Custom-Length Gas System
  • Custom-Forged Upper & Lower Receivers
  • Low-Profile Adjustable Gas Block
  • Non-Reciprocating Side Charging Handle
  • Two-Port Muzzle Brake w/ Taper-Lock Interface
  • Two-Stage Trigger
  • Free-Float Handguard w/ M-LOK Compatibility
  • Hogue Pistol Grip
  • Overall Length 42 7/8″ – 44 1/4″
  • Overall Weight 10.07 Lbs
  • MSRP $1,849.99

The listing of materials and the build-out for this rifle is impressive, but the market and target always decide whether any firearm has staying power. Is it truly accurate? Is it priced appropriately? These will all be things we shall soon find out since this rifle is not even listed on the Savage Arms website yet.

A quote from the men and women at Savage Arms elaborating on this rifle helps develop a more complete picture of the MSR 15 Long Range in .224 Valkyrie:

Any distance, any competitor—there’s no match for the MSR 15 Long Range. Savage tuned the barrel length specifically for the 224 Valkyrie cartridge to achieve peak accuracy at extreme range. The barrel is also topped with a two-port muzzle brake mounted with Savage’s proprietary taper-lock interface. The brake allows the shooter to adjust the recoil impulse of the rifle and stabilize the muzzle for faster, more accurate follow-up shots. The custom-length gas system, paired with a low-profile adjustable gas block, is enclosed by a true free-float handguard. The gas block can be adjusted for optimum cycling of the full range of bullet weights and tuned for use with a suppressor.

As previously stated, the MSR 15 Long Range is currently benchmarked at $1,849. This rifle is not viewable on the Savage Arms website at this time, but it was announced at the NRA Show just weeks ago. You should see it becoming available sometime this summer.

My ignorance as I ask this question: Would the Valkyrie good for a general purpose military round, or for distance shooting only?

@hikerguy If you think that the 5.56mm is close to the ideal but needs a extra oomph, then it would be a great gpmr.

Amazing how the ".224V needs a faster twist" crowd disappeared all of a sudden....
