New World Record: 13 Clay Targets in 1.6 Seconds (VIDEO)

Raniero Testa broke his own record of shooting multiple clay pigeon targets while they are in the air. You may have seen such trick shots before, where the shooter throws a stack of clay targets into the air and shoots each of them separately before they land.

Raniero is a Winchester team shooter and he used a Winchester Super X4 (a.k.a SX4) shotgun to set this new record. So he shot 13 targets in 1.6 seconds. As you can see in the video below, he does it at an amazing speed. It took the shooter 35 minutes of trying and failing until he finally managed to make that happen.

Rapid firing semi-auto and repeating firearms has always been something fun to try and see people do. Everybody likes Jerry Miculek’s rapid shooting, right?

What makes such clay shooting even more difficult is not only the speed you have to be able to pull the trigger at but also the amount and difficulty of the targets you have to engage. If you have shot clay targets, you’ll agree that even shooting a single target is not always very easy. Also, the gun must be capable and accurate enough. I think many semi-auto shotguns won’t even cycle as fast as Raniero pulls the trigger.

13 (aimed!) shots in 1.6 seconds is like a fire rate around 450. Even with the lightest pull of hair triggers I don’t think I could ever shoot that speed with a semi auto anything.

    • gunsandrockets

That is an equivalent cyclic rate of fire of 487 rounds per minute. Yes, very impressive.

    • Captain Obvious

If you watch his other videos he bump fires his shotgun. Nothing wrong with that. It’s the only way you can get 13 rounds out that fast.

  • USMC03Vet

    Hold my AR15….
Legend says his index fingers are registered under the NFA…

    • TechnoTriticale

Interestingly, Ed McGivern (“Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting”) wrote that he used DA revolvers in his rapid-fire exhibitions because semi-auto pistols didn’t cycle fast enough.

He also had to retire early due to arthritic hands. There are some solid things that can be done in diet today to minimize arthritis, but they may not completely counter pushing one’s luck on repetitive motion injury.

      • Edeco

Wow. I’ve supposed that an SA could be run faster.

  • J.T.

Seeing these always reminds me of the late Tom Knapp. Has anyone ever beaten Tom’s record of 8 with a pump shotgun?

  • Jeff Smith
    • Giolli Joker

An American shooting Italian guns vs an Italian shooting American guns.
Knapp maybe couldn’t do 13 (or 11, as his record was 10) clays, but he was arguably more charming and a better showman.
Testa looks more like a hyperfocused athlete… it works for him apparently.

      • Jeff Smith

Very true – the guy is a hell of an athlete.

  • QuadGMoto

    Impressive by every measure.

Even with the extended tube, how did he have 13 2 3/4 inch rounds loaded?

On the irony front, I couldn’t help but notice the Browning umbrella held by one of the cameramen and their logo all over the range during this Winchester sponsored event.

    • Chrono777

That is because they are part of the same company. Herstal Group owns both Winchester and Browning.

      • QuadGMoto

I didn’t know that. Thanks for the info. That’s two things I learned in TFB comments today. 😃 Bonus!

    • AlDeLarge

My shotgun holds 10+1 Estate target loads, even though it’s advertised as 9+1. They’re only 2.25″ but the box says they’re 2.75″ shells. The magazine is even with the 24″ barrel. A little less than 5 more inches of magazine would hold 13 shells.

  • micmac80

Do 16 rounds fit in that extended magazine , original only fits 4

    • Ed Forney

Was wondering the same thing. The gun doesn’t look nearly long enough to hold that many rounds.

    • Just a question, does he need 13 rounds? Is it possible to hit more than one clay pigeon with just one round?

      • Rock Island Auction

You COULD hit more than one clay with a round, but then it would be much easier and wouldn’t be the record.

The record requires that each clay be individually broken by a single round.

  • gunsandrockets

That is one very very long magazine tube!

    There’s an old meme

    …What’s Italian for “Holy $#!+”?

    • Giolli Joker

We don’t use it, but literally it would be “santa merda!”… you can tell that the reaction was somewhere along the line however, as the first words after the feat got beeped out.

  • Giolli Joker

Then we get TV series where the taxidermist is a weird creepy guy and we think that the role is stereotyped…

  • SGT Fish

ive done 5 with a pump 870. need to see what I can do with the 930jm pro next time im out. just holding that many clays in one hand is hard. and throwing them all in the right area takes a lot of practice. makes you want to wear a helmet when trying it

  • Django

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jeff Smith

So did I! I started watching him on American Shooter when I was a kid. I actually got to meet about 15 years ago when he did a shooting demo in Memphis for the Ducks Unlimited Great Outdoors Festival.

I just happened to be wearing my Benelli hat and he signed it for me after the show. That hat is currently hanging on my wall.

  • Jeff Smith

I felt the need to post a picture of said hat. Holy crap, I can’t believe that was 15 years ago!

I owned a Winchester SX-1. Thought it was a great shotgun. Reliable, Stainless steel innards, Many, Many ,Trap and Skeet shooters thought so too. Winchester discontinued it in favor of the SX-2. Is it really better? Any of you guys own an SX-2? The last time Winchester discontinued a great gun was the M-12. They brought out the M-1200 which was a giant piece of crap. They had to reintroduce the M-12. Called the Y model for the S.N. prefix. Historically, Winchester has a lousy track record for discontinuing and introducing new models.
HIGH VOLUME SX-2 target shooters please give feed back!

  • uisconfruzed

I love my Winchester, Benelli & Browning scatter guns.

  • uisconfruzed

I’d be pissed if my winning moment was audio-bombed by someone that STILL needed soap in their mouth.

  • Norm Glitz

I shoot trap with an older Rem 1100. I don’t think it cycles half that fast!
An amazing shooter and an amazing shotgun.

  • 1911a145acp

Congrats to this very talented young man. All right American shooters step up and do 15…..

  • rc_vic_kerman

What exactly would be the purpose of a demonstration like this? You guys seem to have way too much free time on your hands!

    • Andrea Goldstein

Tell that to everybody who has accomplished something that NO ONE has ever done before. Or tell that to all the Olympic champions in the world. Are you friggin’ kidding me??

      • rc_vic_kerman

Well, as a person who broke and crushed his back and Twenty- Two other bones in the same instance and has a pinched spinal cord to date but has overcome all of those handicap(s) to be able to walk again without assistance I believe that I have done something that few have had the fortitude to have ever done and believe that I see things as a champion might! I am 70 years old and still a crack shot and just bought the Ruger Precision 6.5 Creedmoor and can still shot five into the same hole and I am going to try it at over a mile someday soon after I find the right track. I jut do not see the fun or accomplishments of the 15 clays in 1.6 seconds and how it relates to the firearm sport. I mean I shoot one bullet at a time and not a couple of hundred per shot with a spread of a couple of feet!

    • Honestly? Advertising.

The man setting the record is performing an amazing feat, but there’s a reason why the logos are so prominent.

  • maodeedee

Amazing marksmanship and speed. But how about showing pictures of the actual gun he used with the long barrel and the extended magazine?

  • L84Cabo

What type of round is he shooting that gives hime 13 shots…out of a gun with what appears to be a very short mag tube? Is it those little 1 inch shells?

    • Andrea Goldstein

He was clearly cheating, as I saw another shooter on a nearby grassy knoll do most of the shooting for him. (But seriously, he has an extended mag tube that is longer than his barrel — and the barrel is pretty damn long.)

    • AlDeLarge

He’s not shooting the gun in the picture at the top. He’s shooting something with a magazine longer than the barrel.

  • Jimbo

Looked to me that the last two were stuck together, and became lost against the background. Could not confirm they were hit.
