What Do You Want To See From SHOT 2017?

Dear Readers,

Once again, the time is upon us to head out to the Sands Expo in Las Vegas so that we can slog through the endless lanes filled with guns, gear, and schwag. We do this for you the readers, to bring you news of the upcoming highlights for the next year from the gun industry.

Last year we did this same post and it was very helpful to hear about the topics that you are interested in, and if there are any questions we can answer for you. Again, I’m going to compile your requests from the comments into some of my punch list.

Like every year, we should have pretty good coverage (though we will obviously not be able to cover 100% of the show). And we even get some extra time at Range Day to get even MOAR coverage.

My personal focus this year is going to be around precision long range, and anything that supports that. I will also be focusing on training tools, from dry-fire to live-fire.

I do already have a few interviews set up, but will pick as many of your requested topics as I can to fill in gaps in my schedule.

You can get an idea for who is going to be at SHOT by checking out their website (http://shotshow.org/) under the “Exhibitors” section.

What do YOU want to see from SHOT?  I will also consider requests to NOT cover certain things (“Please, Tom, DO NOT cover XYZ, no one wants to see another post about it ever.”). If you request me to cover anything in Flat Dark Earth (or Sniper Gray, or really anything recycled to have a “hawt” new color) I will ask Phil to ban you… 🙂

I will compile my list on Sunday the 15th and work from there. After that point this post will likely be on page 122.

Tom is a former Navy Corpsman that spent some time bumbling around the deserts of Iraq with a Marine Recon unit, kicking in tent flaps and harassing sheep. Prior to that he was a paramedic somewhere in DFW, also doing some Executive Protection work between shifts. Now that those exciting days are behind him, he has embraced his inner “Warrior Hippie” and assaults 14er in his sandals and beard, or engages in rucking adventure challenges while consuming craft beer. To fund these adventures, he writes medical software and builds websites and mobile apps. His latest venture is as one of the founders of IronSights.com; a search engine for all things gun related. He hopes that his posts will help you find solid gear that will survive whatever you can throw at it–he is known (in certain circles) for his curse…ahem, ability…to find the breaking point of anything.

  • Jack Morris

Thanks for asking your readers! Pistol caliber carbines would be great. Also any new CCW guns.

    • JumpIf NotZero

I find the renewed interest in PCC to be interesting considering the success of 300blk. I get it, I own PCCs, but it’s interesting that PCCs are basically just toys now.

      • Jack Morris

That’s the thing; I want someone to make a PCC that isn’t a toy. I want a reputable company to make an affordable lower-mag-block and upper assembly combo. I want it to be just as reliable as my Daniel Defense. And I want to see it for under $1,000. I know it’s a lot to ask, but it’s the only thing I would open my wallet for at the moment.

      • My appreciation for PCCs are to limit the number of calibers I stock without limiting gun purchases too much. After 2008 an 2012, we learned how easy ammo dries up. Stocking few calibers DEEP is wise, I believe.

        * 12/20ga. (12ga home defense, and to well, just have. 20ga for anything fun or non-home defense)
        * 22lr
        * 9mm
        * .380 (ccw – less than 1000rd)

(I have a mosin with one can of ammo, but will never stock more than 400rd of it, ever.)

I’d love to have some sweet 9mm guns in PCC format. Bought a 9mm revolver at the beginning of the year!

  • yodamiles

    Desert Tech MDR
    Hudson H9

    • JumpIf NotZero

And… making it’s third consecutive SHOT Show appearance with no actual release in sight…. the Desert Tech MDR!

Same goes for the Crye Six12 except I can already tell you that thing is a heavy turd.

      • RSG

DT’s excuse that it has to be “perfect first” has worn thin. They’ve lost a lot of potential customers, for good, after these delays. Vaporware.

  • gusto

can us lefthanders get some love?

    I am getting a new .223.

there is CZ 527 if you can find it
Zastava m85 but practially no importers in the EU

tikka, and rem700 but those are long or only short action, i guess ruger and the xbolt to but they are not imported, neither is savage
the blr in 223 is nowhere in europe to find
henrys are a possibility but the iron sights would not visable over qr mounts ):

my dream would be for Browning to do their T-bolt in 223

    • Dickie

      No your freaks

Yeah. I know they made people mad, but I liked the over the top engraved Sigs from last year or the year before. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/1b0fa00b33da98debb43c4da9f86e878bdfe22b39a9ddeb35e62f9f49675b010.jpg

    • HMSLion

Hey! I like electronic targets! Makes running statistics at a big match a whole lot faster and easier…and spectator-friendly.

    • GofGs

Not to forget the new Janz pistol with its unusual locking system

    • RSG

Truck gun racks fell out of fashion because of CRIME. just an FYI.

      • Just to have fun with this postulation, would we claim they fell out of fashion due to national crime levels DECREASING, or the levels of ?vehicle break-in’s, GTA, etc? INCREASING?

        • RSG

I’m 50 years old. The world we are living in isn’t the same as the one I was born into. Long gone are the days when a 13 year old boy would carry a pocketknife to school. There doesn’t have to be any increase/decrease in crime statistics to have any effect on gun racks. The only thing that matters is the type of litigious society we live in and the perception of liability of having a firearm “on display” in your vehicle.

Assault BB Guns like the 200 shot Red Ryder Range Model Air Rifle with a Compass in the Stock and this Shoulder Thing that Goes Up.

Seriously though, more on long range target rifles and what’s competing with the Ruger Precision Rifles, etc.

    • Rick O’Shay

You forgot the thing which tells time.

  • Christian in KS

I’d like to see Beretta actually do something for the civilian market.

    • gusto

their production is probably 90% for civilians

several models of o/u and sbs and double rifles
from affordable like 1500dollars up to not so affordable
semis for hunting are somehwat cheaper

and beretta own sako/tikka to with regular bolt action rifles for hunting and target shooting

      • Christian in KS

I guess I should be more specific. I was more referring to them maybe pumping out more M9A3’s, the PX4 carry edition, and the APX, a civilian ARX 200 would be nice too.

        • Dickie

Yeah i cant find that pX4 compact carry model anywhere

          • GaryOlson

Finding anything Beretta these days is a problem. After moving production lines from MD to Tennessee, they be having some production issues to work out. If you have ever moved a manufacturing production line, you’ll understand. One move I had to deal with black widows living in plumbing parts, one time is was lizards, and one time it was the pollen from the damn trees.

  • ProLiberty82

Glock 19 sized M&P9 and more bolt rifles that take AR15/AR10 magazines.

  • QuadGMoto

I would like to see companies that are either fixing the deficiencies of the AR platform or a practical design to replace it entirely.

    • RSG

Silly you. That’s SHOT Show 2037. You’re early.

    DT MDR and Hartman MH1

  • James

    Beretta ARX 200
Windham Weaponry, there is a rumor about them making their own ACR
    Hudson Mfg, H9
Taurus Spectrum, picture of Ian and Karl pointing and laughing at it

    • Slim934

Yeah I got a promo video on that H9 pistol. That thing looks neaty neat.

    • RSG

Kalishnakov USA, too, while we are at it.

  • HMSLion

    Anything new and NOT AR/AK/1911/Glock.

Traditional muzzle-loading. I know Pedersoli is bringing out a Whitworth rifle soon, and has a double-barreled flintlock shotgun in the works – I’ve seen the prototype.

Olympic target shooting firearms and equipment.

    • JumpIf NotZero

This will be SHOT Show #3 for it. If it’s ever coming out, I really doubt it will be before SHOT #4

  • kregano

If it’s there, Strike Industries’ ambidextrous AR charging handle.

.300 Blackout Tavor & X95, since they’re coming out in February/March (for real this time).

MSBS (if it shows up this year).

Jard J68, especially if it’s available for range day.

Less AR stuff unless it’s really unique or bringing the cost way down.

  • Aono

    As long as we’re dreamin’:

Roller-locked PCCs with LRBHO. Like say… the SI upper (so close) with the Brethren Arms AR15 trigger pack lower. In 10mm best mm. Mec-Gar and/or Magpul magazines.

Not just the MDR.. the Recoil-rumored DT MDR “DMR” version… in 24″ 6.5 Creedmoor with a Proof Research barrel.

Mega Arms to ship Megalithic M-LOK in lengths greater than 12″, ambi bolt catch (not just release), lightened receiver sets in -15 and -10.

LMT to finally release MLOK monolithic already.

    PRI and Lancer: MLOK.

An Ultimax 100 derived clone that takes AR15 barrels.

And so on. You know, unicorn poo.

    • Aono

Well hey, Lancer with Faxon just released MLOK handguards. Noice.

While I’m here – would also like to hear from Athlon about future Cronus (LOW) models.

  • TheNotoriousIUD
  • Rick O’Shay

Here’s a challenge: don’t cover anything AR platform related unless it’s truly never been done before.

I’d like to see innovative ammo (not new calibers! INNOVATIVE!).

Please cover anything that deserves to be mocked so we can mock it.

  • John

I’d like to see comprehensive coverage on TFB on the latest advancements and crop of thermal sights, please….

  • Vincent

I heard that the osprey armament’s mk36h was going to be seen there.
Mostly curious on how it disassembles

  • Jambo

Same as last year: FB MSBS. I want this rifle. Also, anything CZ. There is almost nothing they make that I won’t buy.

    • JumpIf NotZero

      FB MSBS

Wanted one until I held and played with it. SHOT Show should come with a massive warning:

“You only think you want most of this.”

      • Jambo

Do tell. What is wrong with it?

        • JumpIf NotZero

I thought it was heavy and clunky.

The trigger and controls were gritty and the stock was super hard to adjust like someone didn’t understand tolerances and movement/action when making the parts in their 3D CAD system.

          I was disappoint.

          • RSG

            Typical of 3D prototypes. Fwiw.

      • Rusty S.

        I respectfully disagree.

  • Blake

I would honestly love if you guys snapped a photo of every booth that has even semi-interesting items in it (or better yet their product lineup sheet) and just put them all in one post maybe. It would be nice to see a bigass list of a lot of stuff that maybe didn’t warrant a full post by itself.

  • LuvMusic

New wheel guns, especially from Colt and S&W!

James did a video on the Ares SCR a while back. The company has since changed their name to Fightlite Industries, another story TFB covered. However, the SCR has been backordered for over 6 months now, if not longer. You hyped a product that isn’t even available! If you see them, try to find out when they will be back on the market for the many people who want/need an SCR because they live in restricted states. Their marketing has been terrible in communicating when supply will be back online.

  • QuadGMoto

It looks much better in person, especially in black. I really like the simplicity of the design. But reliability needs some work.

  • GaryOlson

Any illuminated optic or laser which does NOT use the color red. Many white males of European descent are red/green color blind. And I think most of us are interested in firearms also (personal poll of one person: me). We see multiple red dots where only one exists. Greens can be grey depending on the wavelength or polarization of the glass.

I think others have said, maybe a little sarcastically…
If someone is introducing a “new” AR pattern rifle it would be really interesting to interview them and ask “Why on Earth?” Same for yet another striker fired 9mm handgun that uses a Browning style lock-up.

Conversely something innovative that ISN’T based on the AR platform (or AK) would be interesting.

There are a few out there working hard to try to recreate some classic historic pieces. That is really how Springfield started out. HMGs troubled STG project? Anything else like that that people can actually BUY without choosing between that and a car $$$?

I think the “everything tactical” fad is fading a bit thankfully.
I see FLIR bringing true thermal to a price point that people can afford without a military budget. That is cool. Any other breakthroughs in night vision or electronics that actually enhance rather than are just gimmicks?
