The FAS (Forces Armées et de Sécurité) Commandoes

Yesterday I wrote about a Chadian solider with a tricked out AKM. I suspected the solider may have belonged to a special forces group. It turns out he is a member of the FAS (Forces Armées et de Sécurité), an elite group of desert warfare commandoes. That AK configuration is standard issue for FAS troops. Seth wrote in the comments …

It’s standard issue in FAS (Forces Armées et de Sécurité, Chad military) commandos, which, unlike Malians, are both well trained, highly mobile and are extremely experienced in desert warfare (the tale as how they infiltrated an Qaddafi column with a handful of their own vehicles a couple years back under the cover of a sand storm, wreak havoc and destroyed the whole unit is a famous one in some circles).

Good trigger discipline on all three visible hands. I’m impressed. That and the dude up front looks right out of hollywood.

Soviet type infantry squad, AKs, PK, RPG(usually an SVD too). That always had more firepower than a typical US squad. This is a well trained, well disciplined unit, better fed by the looks of them. Man if I went to war I would want these guys by my side. I wonder what company did their weapons, was it Israeli or US?

    • northor

      probably french.

    • Chatterbot

      It’s Mako/CAA stuff.

  • The guy with the RPG may do better if he had HE-FRAG rounds instead of HEAT. And maybe get them new weapons from Russia.

    • asdf

That’s actually a Chinese made HEAT round, but whatever.

The Chadians have always been one of the more…”warlike” peoples in that region.
    Ferocious fighters.

    Tinariwen, anyone?

Not surprised nations who love the AKM and AK would update there rifles for Special Forces. Yes many regular forces use original style AKs. See the diverse world of Kalashnikovs in the world LOL!

  • Dude on the right is Dave Chappelle.

But,but, people on the Internet said AK’s were only for untrained peasants *sarcasm* In all seriousness, those are some really cool looking AK’s.

  • Hunter57dor

i am really interested in the optic mounts they are using on those ak’s. very low profile, looks well done. i would love to have one if i could.

The story of the infiltration into a Libyan column under cover of a sand storm and the subsequent destruction the Chadian unit wrought on that column from within is the stuff of legends usually associated with the best special forces units such as the SAS. It says a great deal for the Chadians’ initiative and courage that they were able to carry this out in the face of what must have been daunting odds.
