Speer Ammunition Awarded Contract to Provide Ammunition to the NYPD
Speer Ammunition have announced that they have been awarded a new contract to provide ammunition to the New York Police Department. Speer will supply their 9x19mm 124-grain Gold Dot which will be the department’s service and training ammunition for the next five years during the life of the contract. NYPD have been using Speer ammunition since 2001.
Sako TRG M10 Rifles for NYPD Emergency Service Unit
Just a few days ago, it was announced that the Finnish Defence Forces were buying Sako TRG M10 Precision Rifles. Now Beretta USA, a member of the Beretta Defense Technologies alliance, has announced that the New York Police Department and its Emergency Service Unit (ESU) also bought several Sako TRG M10 multi-caliber sniper systems. The announcement doesn’t reveal which version or caliber(s) the department has chosen, but the picture above shows a black TRG M10, with the 20″, barrel, short fore-end configuration and the optional rear monopod. The rifle is crowned with a riflescope by Steiner (possibly the T6Xi 3-18×56 model), also a member of the Beretta group.
NYPD Busts Ninja Turtle Hideout and Confiscates Weapons
In a recent search warrant executed by the 114th Precinct of the New York Police Department, several weapons, ammunition, and body armor were confiscated and the suspects arrested and charged with criminal possession of weapons. While this may be a frequent occurrence across the nation for police departments, what caught my eye with this snippet from the NYPD Instagram page was the grouping of novelty knives and non-firearms that were confiscated which made this search warrant look more like a raid on the Ninja Turtles hideout rather than a routine warrant execution.
NYPD Retires Last of its Revolvers
Back in November 2017, we reported that New York Police Department was set to retire its remaining revolvers. The news of the retirement of the last .38 revolvers came in a departmental memo that informed officers that they would have to switch to a semi-automatic before September 2018.
NYPD Set to Retire Last of its Revolvers
America’s largest police department is set to finally decommission the last of its service revolvers. The Gun Free Zone blog shared a photograph of a NYPD memo, dated 11/20/17, announcing that all remaining revolvers are to be replaced by department authorised semi-automatic pistols.
Smith & Wesson's NY-1 Revolvers
A lot of people collect firearms. Some people are military collectors that are looking for hard to find surplus guns. Others gravitate toward high-end custom models that have been hand built to their specific requirements. Some shooters like to collect law enforcement service guns.
Upgraded NYPD In Times Square
Whenever I travel somewhere, I have a tendency to notice armed police/security. Especially when they are carrying rifles. Just one week after the Chelsea bombing in NYC, my wife and I took our 4 month old to visit NYC. It was a bit of a risk since I could not legally carry in NYC, but then CCW won’t do much against an IED like what was used last week.. Anyway I noticed an increase in police activity. A lot more police officers on patrol. When I took this picture, I saw people coming up to these officers and thanking them for their service.
Bulletproof Carthart Jacket?
A suspect in NY was shot by NYPD however four of the nine rounds were defeated by the suspect’s Carthart jacket. NYPD uses Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P JHP. According to an article by the Tribunist, one round grazed a bystander. I know from previous examples, the NYPD hit ratio is rather low. If you recall two officers engaged a shooter outside the Empire State Building and missed while engaging him only a few feet away. That makes me wonder if those 4 rounds were not necessarily defeated by the Carthart jacket but perhaps they missed the intended target and the rounds went to the side but still hit the jacket. No mention of which Carthart jacket the suspect was wearing.
