In May of this year, I got the rare opportunity to travel to Heckler & Koch’s headquarters in Ashburn, VA, to take a look at some of the experimental and prototype firearms they have located there in their famous “Grey Room”. It wouldn’t be worth as much for me to just tell you about it and to snap a few foggy cell phone pictures, though, so I brought along Othais of C&Rsenal to help me take high resolution light box photos of these unique and rare firearms.
Today we’ll be taking a look at one of Heckler & Koch’s most rare and iconic firearms: The caseless, hyperburst G11 rifle. This weapon was the result of a massive effort on the part of Dynamit Nobel and Heckler & Koch to develop a weapon that could fire advanced caseless ammunition at high rates of fire, a concept that – if perfected – would produce the most advanced and effective individual weapon ever developed in the world. The G11K2 variant, shown here, was the first of the “perfected” weapons, using the final ammunition iteration developed with its bullet fully telescoped into the combustible propellant block.
Unfortunately, financial difficulties caused by the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reconstruction and reintegration of East Germany forced the cancellation of the G11 and its innovative caseless ammunition. However, the design would get one last hurrah before finally riding off into the sunset…
