Steyr Arms Secures Contract for New Grenade Launcher with the German Bundeswehr

Austria’s Steyr Arms have announced they have been awarded a contract to supply elements of the German armed forces with their GL 40. Steyr’s 40mm grenade launcher can be mounted under the barrel of a service rifle or it can be mounted on a Steyr-designed standalone stock with an adjustable buttstock.

The single-shot launcher fires standard 40x46mm low and medium velocity grenades and weighs 2.58 lbs. It has a two-position safety catch and a hinged, rather than sliding, barrel that pivots. The barrel is made from cold hammer forged steel. The system has rail mounting points for aiming systems and is 10.4 inches in length.

The Bundeswehr’s procurement department BAAINBw launched a request for proposals in the summer of 2022. This request outlined a requirement for up to 4,776 grenade launchers. Steyr’s announcement did not state the value of the procurement or the quantity ordered by the Bundeswehr or the units destined to receive them.
