HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Chinese Magistey or International Tragedy?

Welcome everyone to the 193rd edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, by a narrow margin deemed the sporterized Mosin-Nagant a hot gat.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“Pre-Tapco SKS mods. I’d be willing to pay 1990 prices, but I think I’d still regret it.” – Doug E.

    “The Dragunov at home…” – Matt M.

    “So…that’s $599 for a crate of these, right?” – Rusty S.

Selling this imported gat is GunBroker seller The-Shootin-Shop, located in Abilene TX.  Let’s see what they had to say about this Chinese variant of a cold war classic.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Chinese Majesty or International Tragedy?

The SKS was never the best quality rifle but they are (or were) cheap, reliable, and fun to shoot.  I know myself and a lot of shooters probably grew up with one or a friend who had one.  Sure it’s easy to poke fun at the SKS.  It’s often one of the most overly sporterized rifles you’ll see for sale.

Sadly, these rifles are getting more and more rare and surplus ammo is slowly drying up.  Feels rather melancholy if I’m honest.  Sure this one isn’t in the best shape, and I’m not a huge fan of the stock.  Still all in all I think someone could and should enjoy shooting this rifle.

What do you think?  Is this Chinese SKS with it for just under $600?  Or is it time to move on to something a little more modern?  As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
