HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Sporterized Surplus or Tactical Circus?

Welcome everyone to the 192nd edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the decorated A2 throwback was a hot gat.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“Wanna offend young, modern shooters and old, collectors alike? Purchase this boat oar, comrade!” – Adam S.

“CG63 we have at home” – Daniel Y.

“He accurized the least accurate bolt action rifle ever made, and in doing so destroyed any historical value it may have ever held. No lowballs.” – Benjamin F.

“It looks like those cheap garbage air rifles from China.” – Nick C.

“This looks like a rifle used by a biathlon team that skis on 2×4’s” – Rusty S.

HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Sporterized Surplus or Tactical Circus?

I’ve seen a few Mosin-Nagant rifles in my life.  From straight out of the crate, chopped down and heavily modified, and then there’s this.  Objectively, you could consider things like the recoil pad or pic rail section to be modern enhancements.  Like all milsurp sporterized rifles, things quickly got out of hand from there.  Sure, the bipod is practical, but is the plan really to shoot groups with a Mosin?  Also is there an AAC M-400 nearby or is that muzzle break just there to make the rest of the firing line angry?

Let’s say hypothetically this is the best shooting Mosin-Nagant of all time.  I mean this thing really drives tacks and justifies all the modern upgrades.  Even then I still don’t see the point in a bench rest rifle that’s chambered in 7.62x54R.  I know this ammo used to be cheap, but with surplus supplies slowly dwindling, I think it might be time for some of us to move on.  I understand the history, and there is a certain cool factor about old rifles.  But all I can really say is, the future is now old man.

What do you think?  Is all this worth it for just a shade under 1k or is your money better spent elsewhere?  As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
