HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? The Ultimate Decorative M16 or Can't Be Unseen?

Welcome everyone to the 191st edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the wildcat-themed AR-15 was fudd crap.

At this time, the original auction remains up with the $5,500 Buy It Now price unchanged.  It was a massive defeat for this gat (at least to our audience), but like all firearms featured in this series, we hope it finds its way to a suitable home in the very near future.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a very custom AR-15 chambered in .223 Wylde. As is tradition, this engraved rifle-length gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $2,599 Buy It Now.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“That’s actually good looking. But seems more like a wall hanger than anything else.” – Nick C.

“The detatchable carry handle lets it down a little for me.” – Matt M.

Firearm trends come and go, and in recent years the trend has been more retro rifles.  I certainly never expected to see more rifles with carry handles at events like SHOT or NRAAM, but I guess we’ve come full circle from high speed to classic.  Given the popularity of the AR platform, it was only a matter of time (and not the first time) before we started to see rifles like this.  Because hey, if we’re going old school why not make it look even older?  The whole theme here is rather strange in a few different areas.

At first glance, I thought to myself, “So it’s like a fancy over-the-top M16 clone.  Got it.”  Well, actually no it’s almost the inverse.  It’s a billet receiver set with a hydraulic buffer and a 233 Wylde barrel.  The only reference in the description is that it’s the “style of an A2 traditional AR”.  I never thought we’d be looking at awarding style points in this series, but the engraved bayonet might help it stick the landing though so who knows.   All jokes aside, it looks like a very high-quality build with some incredible engraving.

What do you think?  Does all the custom work and detail justify an asking price of $2,599?  Or are we better off without wood and engraving on an A2-inspired AR15?  As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
