Swiss KUGS LR90 Ambidextrous Bolt Action Rifle (1)

Firearms designed by Florian Kohli of the Swiss company KUGS are always fascinating with many unique and unusual design solutions. A couple of KUGS guns we saw earlier are the FATBOY single-shot rifle that has a very simple design with a cannon-like sliding breech and the HD410 18-shot 410 bore pepperbox. In this article, we’ll take a look at Florian’s latest design, the KUGS LR90 ambidextrous bolt action rifle.

Swiss Firearms @ TFB:

What makes the KUGS LR90 rifle ambidextrous is the possibility to turn the bolt handle down to either the left or right side of the gun when closing the action, without swapping, switching or adjusting any parts. Florian claims that the LR90 is the first ambidextrous rifle in the world. Here is a video showing how that feature works.

The KUGS LR90 rifle is designed from the ground up (including the magazine) and has been in development for about two years. The LR in the model name stands for Left Right (Links Rechts in German) and 90 indicates the bolt throw angle. The rifle is designed to be used with Scout scopes or reflex sights as the straight bolt handle with a 90-degree throw and the top ejecting design don’t allow having a regular scope that extends over the receiver and bolt handle.

The receiver of the KUGS LR90 rifle is symmetrical to allow turning the bolt to either side.

KUGS LR90 rifle is designed to be very easy to manufacture and maintain. All parts are simplified and can be made with basic machine shop equipment. Complete disassembly of the rifle requires a tool, however, the bolt can be disassembled without a use of tools as demonstrated in the video below.

The KUGS LR90 rifle will be displayed at the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva which will take place from April 26th to 30th, in Palexpo, Geneva, Switzerland.
