3rd Day of TFB Christmas: Santa’s Silent Night with Suppressors

With some great changes coming to the ATF Forms system, buying a suppressor is getting easier by the day. I don’t necessarily have any hope that wait times will come down by a significant amount but I’m at least happy that the agency is moving in a direction that at least makes it easier for us to get our part done before we sit on our hands for 9 months waiting for that approval letter to come back. I’ve been doing a lot of talking with gun owners from across the world to figure out what gun culture and gun law is like in other parts of the world and to my surprise, it’s almost universally agreed upon in nearly every country besides the United States that suppressors are a safety device rather than a mythical silent murdering tool that is used by Agent 47 and other shiny headed assassins. If you’ve yet to take the plunge into NFA territory, then maybe this Christmas is a perfect time for a silent night and by that, I mean buying your first suppressor. Today we’ll go over some of my top suppressor picks for everything from rimfire up to magnum rifle calibers.

Rimfire – The SilencerCo Switchback 22LR suppressor

I’ve been messing around with the SilencerCo Switchback for a while now and it has fast become one of my favorite rimfire suppressors. Not only is it full-auto rated but it is also compatible with some non-rimfire offerings like 5.7x28mm. What’s really cool about the Switchback is that it is a modular suppressor and can be configured in a number of different ways to adapt to whatever you’re using at the time. On 22LR rifles you can use the “short” version of the can to keep things nice and compact while still offering some decent hearing protection while the “long” version is great to slap on a pistol in its default configuration to have a dead quiet plinking platform perfect for those Christmas day shoots with the kids.

Big Bore and More – The SilencerCo Hybrid 46

If you haven’t got a lot of cash to spend on suppressors and just need one that will work for almost anything then look no further. The SilencerCo Hybrid 46 is indeed rated for everything up to .338 Lapua Magnum but it can also handle wildcat cartridges like the heavy-hitting .458 SOCOM and other popular calibers like .300 BLK and .45-70 Govt. Buy once, cry once … just make sure you bring extra thread adapters.

Extreme Durability – The Dead Air Sandman-S

Suppressors are a pretty hefty investment no matter how you cut it and you’ll want your investment to last unless you’re swimming in both cash and time. The Dead Air Sandman-S is the company’s extremely durable and versatile offering for those who want their suppressors to stand up to as much abuse as their rifles get. The Sandman-S is even compatible with 7.62×39 rifles under the right circumstances and is perfectly compatible with the KeyMount system.
