I recently had an opportunity to visit the SIG Sauer Electro-Optics facility in Wilsonville, Oregon just last week. While I was there I had the opportunity to get a first-hand look at a whole host of optics and how they are made. While the facility is relatively new, being opened up in 2014, the team there is hard at work developing and assembling new optics like the soon to be released ROMEO2 Red Dot sight.

While at SIG Sauer Electro-Optics (SSEO), I not only had a chance to get some trigger time behind the SIG ROMEO2, I also had a chance to abuse the optic and witness its durability first hand. While at the facility, we had a chance to witness the optic being dropped using a special rig designed by SIG employees to test its drop capability. The rig simulates the weight of various handguns and can be articulated so that the drop can be replicated consistently at nearly any angle when the optic impacts the floor.

Needless to say that despite this extreme drop height, not only did the shroud stay intact, the optic itself suffered no internal damage and the emitter remained functioning through several drop tests. The range performance of the ROMEO2 was equally impressive. I had a chance to shoot it in both configurations (with and without the shroud). The LCI deflection shield does a good job of directing gasses vented out of the back of the barrel away from the front lens and this keeps the optic free of residue making for a clean field of view.

Despite the constant changes in weather (rain, followed by sunshine followed by rain) the completely sealed ROMEO2 didn’t have any issues with fogging or distortion due to the humidity. When the modular shroud is removed, the optic gains a bit more field of view making for a very generous sight picture which makes transitioning between targets much faster.

All in all, I am excited to get my hands on one of these ROMEO2 optics in the future to really put it through its paces. The rugged design combined with its generous field of view and modular features I think will make for a great one-size-fits-all optic that can be useful in both duty and recreational applications. The ROMEO2 Mil-Spec Red Dot Sight will be available in limited amounts beginning in Q1 of 2021 and will retail for $779.99 MSRP, however, you’re likely to find them available for a street price closer to $599.99.
