HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Carbine Companion or Clown Act Contraption?

Welcome everyone to the 62nd edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the “mermaid” F1 AR-15 was purely fudd crap.

At this time the original auction remains up on GunBroker.  We can only hope that this not so little mermaid will find a new home soon.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a rare Taurus 30 S chambered in 30 Carbine. As is tradition, this very long-barreled revolver is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $2,500 with No Reserve.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“If you’re thinking of being able to share the .30 Carbine round between your M1 Carbine and a pistol, look elsewhere, because this might as well be carbine with that barrel.” – Doug E.

“A used Taurus that costs much more than an M1 carbine, weighs almost as much, and is much more awkward to carry?  Hard pass.” – Rusty S.

“Oddball revolver in a caliber still on the shelves? Hot Gat! @ $300…” – Giorgio O.

“If you can afford to drop two and a half grand just for endless ‘BIG IRON’ memes and Instagram flexes, I guess go ahead.” – Will P.

Selling this rare Taurus is GunBroker seller BMB-GUNS, located in Milton LA.  Let’s see what they had to say about this carbine chambered hand cannon.

Taurus 30S … Very very rare…. Taurus 30 S (silhouette). Chambered in 30 carbine. 8 shot. More rare than the Raging Thirty (30). This revolver differs as it doesn’t have the cylinder and crane lock like the Raging models. Only locks at the cylinder like a standard revolver. It is in very good condition. Fired very little. I will supply 1 Taurus factory full moon clip. TK customs makes moon clips for this revolver as well. This revolver is a good shooter but also a collector’s item…. Does NOT have original box or paperwork. I will ship in a plastic case for added protection. Trades are always considered. Please email me with details. bmbguns@hotmail.com… Additional pics can be supplied on request…. Caveat Emptor (Let the buyer beware): As with all used firearms, you must get it checked out by a competent gunsmith before attempting to fire it…..

There are more than a few long-barreled revolvers out there, but a 12-inch barrel is pretty outrageous.  I guess someone on the Taurus design team decided they wanted to capitalize on that sweet-sweet 30 Carbine velocity.  Personally, I’d prefer a shorter barrel a few less FPS.  You know, so I need to use a rifle case to bring my handgun to the range.

While I’m sure there’s a collectors market for handguns like this, I certainly don’t see this gun selling for upwards of $2,500.  Revolvers like classic Colt Pythons will certainly fetch prices that high.  However, a gun that should be “checked out by a competent gunsmith before attempting to fire it” probably won’t sell for that.

You never know though.  Maybe there’s a die-hard Taurus collector out there (who may or may not be Hop from TFBtv) who is looking for a rare Taurus 30 S.  But is this revolver a hot gat?  As always I leave it up to you, the reader, to decide.
