Brevard County Sheriff's Deputies will soon carry the Walther PPQ M2.

Walther Arms was founded in Germany in 1886. Since then, they have primarily produced handguns and today their lineup includes the PPQ or PolizeiPistole Quick Defence. Available since 2011, the PPQ comes in several variants and calibers including 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. The M2 version is characterized by a left- or right-hand reversible magazine thumb release at the bottom of the trigger guard, versus the standard ambidextrous mag release levers incorporated into the trigger guard of the standard PPQ. As of June 2020, Walther has announced that this model chambered in 9mm will be adopted as standard issue for the Brevard County, Florida Sheriff’s office – shortly following the same selection by York County, Pennsylvania. The press release reads:

Walther Secures Brevard County Sheriff’s Contract

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (FL) with over 900 sworn officers decided to switch from their issued .40 caliber pistols to the 9x19mm caliber. As part of their selection process, the Walther PPQ M2 9mm 4” pistol was chosen as one of the issued pistols for the agency.

The Walther PPQ was issued to regular personnel, while Q5 Match was issued to their Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. “It turns good shooters into great shooters and great shooters into phenomenal shooters,” said Major Herrera, of Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

After a rugged test and evaluation procedure, we are excited to provide BSCO with their pistols and we look forward to continuing our assistance with training, armorers’ classes, and support.” Said Rick DeMilt, Director of Law Enforcement Sales.

Walther is particularly proud of the trigger on this handgun. They describe it as “Extraordinarily comfortable and genuinely elegant, advancing both efficiency and ergonomics for self-defense handguns in ways never thought possible before. The PPQ is the ultimate definition of effectiveness. The PPQ is the handgun that has the entire industry talking. The quick-defense trigger is known as the best striker-fired trigger by nearly every critic. The ergonomically designed grips fit the hand like a familiar pair of gloves, providing a uniquely accurate natural point of aim.

For those of you who have shot or own this firearm, would you agree? Is this a good decision by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, or should they have stuck with a more common option like Glock? Let us know what you think in the comments below! See you at the range.
