The action in this rifle is an inverted Enfield M1917 (or maybe Enfield P14). It was done so that a lefty could use it!

As a southpaw the more firearms that can be used by lefties the better.
It's hard to say what the intention was here. Given the complexity of the stockwork, I would venture that it would have been easier (and more practical) to machine a left-handed action.
