Brownells Launches Retro M16A1 Furniture | Let The Cloning Commence!!!!

I’m not gonna lie, I am super excited to see more retro AR-15 parts like new production retro M16A1 furniture hit the market since M16A1 kits have become very hard to come across in good, complete condition and they often cost nearly as much as a complete rifle.

The $349 M16 parts kits have dried up. If you are looking to build a retro rifle clone, new production parts or a complete rifle from one of the outfits putting together a retro rifle are your only real options.

Brownells has really been leading the charge when it comes to keeping the selection of retro rifle parts available to anyone who wants to put together their own ‘Nam throwback rifle. When they started offering M16A1 correct barrels with installed front sight posts, people that don’t have the capability of installing a front sight post on a virgin barrel at home like myself were reasonably excited. I can recall the barrels selling out quickly and the back order list being forever long. After about a year wait, my barrel showed up at the door and I couldn’t have been happier with my clone rifle.

Since the introduction of the barrels, Brownells has made A1 upper and lower receivers available, barrels in several different profiles to include XM177 and M16A2, period correct small parts and most recently, new production retro furniture. You can find all of the retro parts that Brownells has by clicking HERE.

The gun nerds over at Brownells have rolled out three different colors for builders to choose from depending on the overall look they are going for.

The black furniture would obviously be for builders looking to replicate the M16, M16A1, XM16E1, Colt 602 and rifles produced after 1963.

  • Complete Retro Furniture Set, Black. #078-000-353. $79.99 retail.
  • Retro Handguard, Black. #078-000-344. $39.99 retail
  • Retro Stock, Black. #078-000-350. $39.99 retail.
  • Retro Pistol Grip, Black. #078-000-347. #14.99 retail.

The green furniture is perfect for those looking to replicate early production Colt 601 rifles that were adopted by the Air Force in 1959.

  • Complete Retro Furniture Set, Green. #078-000-354. $79.99 retail.
  • Retro Handguard, Green. #078-000-345. $39.99 retail.
  • Retro Stock, Green. #078-000-351. $39.99 retail.
  • Retro Pistol Grip, Green. #078-000-348. $14.99 retail.

While the brown furniture probably isn’t exactly the same, you can use it to put together a copy of the very early AR-15 prototype rifles.

  • Complete Retro Furniture Set, Brown. #078-000-355. $79.99 retail
  • Retro Handguard, Brown. #078-000-346. $39.99 retail.
  • Retro Stock, Brown. #078-000-352. $39.99 retail.
  • Retro Pistol Grip, Brown. #078-000-349. $14.99 retail.

You mean this one? Y’all had good taste back in the day.

          • CJS

That’s the song, but I was trying to find the tv series intro.
            And yes brilliant song!

          • Brett baker

We had an exchange student from Denmark in my high school. He watched TOD, fascinated. When asked why he liked it so much, “because it’s a good show, but not that good”. He replied, “We Don’t have anything like this in Denmark.”

          • ostiariusalpha

They made a mistake in the transcription of the lyrics in the video (at 2:44). They wrote it as, “Don’t want to see the sun, flying high in the sky.” But actually Mick is saying, “I want to see the sun, blotted out from the sky.”

        • Jeremy Star

Due to our insane copyright laws, Tour of Duty was not allowed to use the music it originally aired with in the 1980s when it was finally put on DVD.

Bah! Wagner Walkürenritt or nothing! Gitt sum! gitt sum!

      • Brett baker

        You are correct, sir!

Speaking of “Huey” music, what about that track from Preadator? Think it was by Little Richard?

          • MeaCulpa

Long Tall Sally! The scene is on YouTube, just google “long tall sally predator” and it should be the first hit!

    • mosinman

this is my favorite CCR song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbI0cMyyw_M

      • iksnilol

Ironically, that song is anti-gun. The band wanted to adress about there being too many guns.

        • mosinman

Lynerd Skynyrd’s Saturday Night Special is also anti pocket gun but it’s an amusing song.

          • iksnilol

I sorta assumed it was obvious what with “Satan cries; take aim!”

          • mosinman

not really, that could be construed to have different meanings depending on your viewpoint. I had assumed it was an Anti Vietnam War song. that being said CCR clearly stated it was anti gun so yeah.

  • Cal.Bar

    Yeah, BACKORDERED until when????

    • civilianaf

      annndddd there gone..in 2 days.

  • Brett baker

Can you order a 1-14 twist barrel with the brown furniture?

    • Brett baker

Or, I just remembered, the first 1,000 Colts had 1-16 barrels because the rifling equipment hadn’t arrived yet. TUMBLING 223!

      • DW

Thus the most lethal combat shotgun ever known to men.

    • DrewN

I think Green Mountain has 1-14, but Brownells has 1-12 with the FSB installed for $230. Close enough for me. I want a slick side upper though, not an A1.

      • ostiariusalpha

Same here. Classic Air Force M16; no prefix, no suffix.

  • DESTRO YAKISOBA

They are offering 1-7 twist barrels, and that is awesome.

  • Ratcraft

I peed just a little with glee. But it’s all on backorder already.

  • B-Sabre

  • Zundfolge

The timing on this is great as I was just thinking about building an A1/pre A1 looking Dissipator (although I’d love to find early looking furniture in carbon fiber so I could also make it real light).

    • civilianaf

      Te plastic is pretty light…

  • codfilet

a friend of mine has a full set of original brown furniture. It doesn’t look like the set in this photo.

    • DW

The set is for NCR profligates only.

    • Patrick R. – Senior Writer

Oh man! Please email me some photos of that! tfbpatrick@gmail.com

      • codfilet

We’re set up at a gun show today. I’ll see if he has the set there.

      • codfilet

Email with photos on the way.

Thank you sir! I am going to blog that picture so everyone can enjoy the cool!

Remember when I said I wouldn’t build another AR?

    I LIED

  • iksnilol

It ain’t me, it ain’t me; I ain’t no fortunate one, no

Waaait, WAIT! … Did original ARs have brown furniture? This sorta… Sorta ruins my Vietnam flashbacks.

    • ostiariusalpha

The original brown furniture had a sweet, textured appearance, not like this bland poop color.

      • iksnilol

        Makes a lot of sense.

That’s why they weren’t fortunate… because theeir guns looked like poop.

      • Brett baker

        Looks like a Turnbull stock.

      • LGonDISQUS

        That looks like bakelite’d fiberglass!

        • ostiariusalpha

          That’s exactly what it is.

          • civilianaf

Are you sugegesting they make it out of fiberglass? Theres a reason nobody uses that anymore….look around, you wont find a set that isnt cracked. They should make a fiberglass Glock frame too #sarcasm #solidplan

          • ostiariusalpha

There are quite a few sets that can be found that aren’t cracked or damaged, but their owners are usually collectors who aren’t interested in selling them, which makes those pristine sets that are for sale a little expensive. Glock frames are made from Nylon 6, with glass filament material embedded in the polymer, so it’s already a type of fiberglass. The problem with the old AR-15 furniture is that Bakelite lacks in tensile strength and elasticity, but there are plenty of modern, semi-translucent polymers that can be tinted to replicate the look without being as delicate.

          • iksnilol

tell that to bakelite AK mags 😉

  • TechnoTriticale

So does this imply that original Colt AR15 SP1 rifles are now priced too high?

    • LGonDISQUS

Like when InRange TV were calling out Colt directly to their faces about the costs of the repoduction M16A1’s!!! 😂😂😂

  • Mr. Katt

So where are the ‘do-it-yourself’ M14 kits for those of us who didn’t use the little plastic thing?

    • Mitlov

      Springfield Armory

  • I M Deplorable

I love the smell of my credit card burning in the morning.

    • Steve

      Outstanding!

  • Matt

I just finished up a lightweight 18″ rifle with MOE rifle stock and handguard, OD green. I kinda really want to get this stuff in green just to finish off that “Modern A1” vibe.

    • neoritter

Are you me? I’m freaking out here man…

  • Mr.SATism

    Finally! I can have a reliable m16a1!

    • DJ

My issued M16A1 wasn’t that reliable.

      • Joe

        Bad mags?

        • DJ

Bigger issues than mags. I think the gas operated system or so I was told.

          • Joe

Failure to extract would be either incorrectly cut chamber, lack of chrome lined chamber, extremely fouled and or pitted chamber, broken gas tube, broken extractor or extractor spring, loose gas key.

Was this an issue that only affected your personal M16A1, or also your fellow squad, and platoon mates?

          • DJ

As I remember it was more than a few. My personal one had issues. At some point mine got traded out. If I remember it was carbon and problems with the gas system, whatever that meant. 18 and wasn’t firearm savvy.

          • iksnilol

Mate, I doubt we’re gonna help him out much by troubleshootin’ his 50 year old rifle that”s probably a soda can and railroad spike by now.

      • tsubaka

        issued when?
        60’s?
        70’s?

        • DJ

          70 – 71. 69 they replaced the M14.

  • Pete Sheppard

I checked Brownell’s and the buttstock has the solid buttplate, and presumably no compartment for cleaning gear rather than steel with the cover and holes for cleaning gear.

    • civilianaf

      No compartment, confirmed.

      • Pete Sheppard

Hopefully, Brownell’s will soon carry the compartmented version. That’s the one I want for an -A1 build.

  • civilianaf

I love this…I dont know whats happening to me. I’m usually so bitter.

  • Uniform223

    nah this is better 😉

  • iksnilol

Found the intro. Thank me later, alligator.

    • CJS

      You legend iksnilol!!!!
      That’s going in my favourites.

  • ostiariusalpha

The Colt 601 was the series that had the brown furniture, they painted over it with green for the 602.

  • Allison Haas

    The stocks are in stock.

  • Steve

This seems like some kind of “Tacticool” backlash.

  • Steve
  • Treyh007

Love these Retro builds, finally it’s becoming easier and cheaper to clone one like your dad or grandpa had back in Nam! Beautiful rifles!

  • Ben

But will they hold up to being hit with a hammer ?

  • Primate

The brown one is horror itself.

  • Geoff Timm

No thank you. I was a 45B20 in the 1970s and I can tell you all the faults of the M16A1, including the handguards which pinched your fingers. Geoff Who likes his Magpul furniture and PSA and SWaMPy 15 rifles.

  • TalbotFarwell

I want one of these soooo badly now. It’s also making me want an Armalite AR-10 clone with the charging handle mounted inside the carrying handle and the cool brown Bakelite furniture, like the Portuguese paratroopers used in Africa in the early ’60s.

  • TheNotoriousIUD

Is that Johnny Depp from “Platoon”?

  • neoritter

Is it just me, or does the green and brown furniture look like Exorcist puke and crap respectively?

  • TheNotoriousIUD
