Tac-Hammer Precision Barrel for Ruger 10/22

Adaptive Tactical announced new Tac-Hammer barrels for the Ruger 10/22 rifles and Charger pistols. This barrel design is designed to offer the benefits of a bull barrel without adding the weight. The company advises they accomplish this by using a rigid core barrel with a stepped design and combining it with a post-tension aluminum shroud.

Adaptive Tactical is offering barrels for the standard and take down versions of both the rifle and pistol. Barrels are made of P4140 steel, and the shrouds are made of 6061 aluminum. All of the barrels use a 1:16″ twist and are threaded (1/2×28).

Rifle versions have a suggested retail price of $329.99 while the Charger models list at $299.99.

Aluminum over steel? So it’s like the Tac-Sol barrels that have been around for a while….

      Exactly what I was thinking

Now, what would be nice, is if they made this for the 10/22 Takedown. Light weight accuracy with extra mags in the stock.

They do make them I checked there website, its the same price as the normal barrel. Plus look at the picture its of a takedow

Not really, sure they both have aluminium on top of steel to increase rigidity but they do it differently, tactical solutions just has aluminium wrapped barrel whereas this company has an aluminium sleeve that will add physical strength by wrapping around the barrel just like tacsol but it also has the jam nut to make the aluminium sleeve act as a strut to pull the barrel taught similar to what an accustrut does on a mini 14. And this company gives you a cantilever mount just for extra giggles though I think that could mess with harmonics even with the barrel strut.

I’d have to do the analysis to be sure, but I’m not sure how much that jam nut adds to the structural rigidity over a press fit, which IIRC is what the Tac-sol is. Bending would be a negligible change for sure, my only question would be how it performs in shear….

        • Twilight sparkle

I’m pretty sure the jam nut isn’t really there for additional rigidity, it’s just there to pull the barrel like a string so there isn’t as much barrel whip when it heats up. The aluminium probably helps to act a heat sink to prevent the barrel from heating up that much to begin with though.

Based on the drawing above, the jam nut is there to tie the shroud mechanically to the insert. When you tighten down on the nut, you’re putting the shroud in compression, which will tend to counteract barrel movement in any direction. Thing is a press fit accomplishes the same thing through different means. The friction over the entire bearing surface will counteract barrel movement also.

Hope they are priced right because this is already on the market. Kidd, VQ, magnum research all already make a similar barrel. And they’re spendy. aaaaaaand I just checked their site. They are not cheap. They do offer the rail attached to the barrel like VQ does, and a compensator, which makes the price a little more palatable if you are into those things.
