Week 43.

Well, .223 Rem appears to be running low–at least the number of vendors (of the ones I’ve been following) don’t have the stock they did. A number of the vendors aren’t even listing it. Woohoo for all of the panic buyers. I imagine that stock will take a few months to catch back up to pre BATFE letter levels… Looking back at the previous weeks of data it appears that world events (like the invasion of the Ukraine) don’t affect ammo prices–speculation about what a US Government agency is considering, however, does…

We do appreciate the support and constructive comments and will continue this article series as long as it is productive.

As always, if you have comment or witticisms, please leave them below. And if you find that some of the items are now out of stock or the prices have significantly changed, please let the other readers know. Also, if you know of any vendors that are not represented here and you have had a good experience with, comment below and we will see about adding them.

We have included the raw data so you can run your own trends: Weekly Ammo – 20150306

Tom is a former Navy Corpsman that spent some time bumbling around the deserts of Iraq with a Marine Recon unit, kicking in tent flaps and harassing sheep. Prior to that he was a paramedic somewhere in DFW, also doing some Executive Protection work between shifts. Now that those exciting days are behind him, he has embraced his inner “Warrior Hippie” and assaults 14er in his sandals and beard, or engages in rucking adventure challenges while consuming craft beer. To fund these adventures, he writes medical software and builds websites and mobile apps. His latest venture is as one of the founders of IronSights.com; a search engine for all things gun related. He hopes that his posts will help you find solid gear that will survive whatever you can throw at it–he is known (in certain circles) for his curse…ahem, ability…to find the breaking point of anything.

I found two cases of SS109s in my basement, 420 rounds each, boxed and stripper clipped. Time to troll Armslist

  • Bert Macklin FBI

I’d like to see Cheaper than Dirt no longer included in this list. No respectable firearm website should do anything that may send them business.

    • Blake

There’s worse out there. They may not be the greatest online shop, but if you understand how their warehousing system works, you can do pretty well with them if you keep an eye out for deals (I’ve never had a problem with them).

However, if you don’t understand that CtD is really more like a mini-Amazon in that they have a bunch of warehouses that share the same portal & each charge you an individual shipping fee, it’s easy to get screwed in a hurry.

Anyway for ammo & mags I just use Ammoseek.com & give my business to the lowest reputable bidder, so if they price-gouge I’m happy to take my commerce elsewhere.

Lately that ends up being Freedom Munitions more often than not anyway.

      • Mike Price

I have emailed them and told them I would order more from them but their screwy shipping system prevents me from ordering usually. They need to get with it and ship from one central warehouse. But then again they would have to stock it and about half of the online don’t have inventory. All selling from a networked warehouse or pre-sell an item.

  • Mike Price

I have been telling people for the last 6 months this 22’s shortage has to come to an end. All the other ammo is plentiful. Why not 22’s? Hoarder’s is the only reason I can come up with. I talk to people that have 6,000 to 20,000 rounds now or more. I offered some 22’s for sale as I don’t really need more than about 1,000 rounds a year to shoot and a guy wants to buy all I have for sale. Then he messages me a picture showing me 12 bricks of 22’s he has and said he has more in his safe. Why is he buying mine? Another guy posted a picture of what he has and he has about 150 bricks of 22’s laid out on the floor. 20 bricks of this kind, 30 bricks of this. He couldn’t shoot that much in his whole lifetime. Until the hoarders and resellers get loaded up this is going to be a perpetual shortage. It shows up on the shelf in a store and its sold out within hours. Everybody that walks past it is going to grab it weather they need it or not….its hard to get, better get it while I can. We ARE our own worst enemy.

    • Blake

Another question is: if there’s such a problem making, shipping, & stocking rimfire ammo, why are nailgun blanks still cheap as chips at Lowes?

      • Limonata

No bullet, or bullet lube or copper wash, less tolerance needed and different propellant as well as different laws.

    • Limonata

If you go to forums like Rimfirecentral, there are some with pictures of the their 22lr stash that they claim shows 100,000+ rounds of 22lr. I bet if you did a query on gun broker on everything that is for sale, there are over 1mm rounds for sale.

Now I see 223/5.56 hoarding. Might have been on Arfcom where someone was stating they had 50,000 rounds of 223 stashed away.

Gun owners are often their own worst enemy.

I keep hoping that this will end like the like the Tulip mania and resulting Tulip Bulb Market Crash but it seems no end in sight. The stupid is strong.

    • Roadrunner0

The real problem will be when these hoarders start unloading this poorly stored ammo back onto the market and the consumer gets stuck with piles of duds or just old erratic junk..

  • Mike Price

Most guys Blacklisted CTD on their price gouging in the shortage. I mean mags went from $12 to $69 overnight with them.

  • Mark N.

Last Saturday I checked various of the vendors listed in the weekly report for 62 grain .223–and most were sold out or gouging. Nor was there any 55 grain. I exchanged e-mails with Freedom Munitions today–they have been almost completely cleaned out of .223 except for some SP hunting rounds (that I am not about to buy for plinking). My local chain stores are cleaned out except for the buck a round varieties. Makes me wish I had the money in my ammo budget these hoarders do, because there is no way I can afford going to a gun show to pay 3-4x retail. So I guess I’ll just have to put my little friend away and stick to pistols until the run dies down in 6 months or so.

    • Mark N.

P.S.: I just checked the Cobra site–and it has a waiting list now for Wolf steel case 55 gr.

  • ensitue

Ammo prices and availability well not go down until Obama steps down

  • Nphocus

Is there any chance of adding 10mm to the pistol ammo tracking list as finding it for less than a buck a round is often sketchy at best.

  • Mike Price

What gets me, people are paying .80 cents a round for ammo that isn’t even banned and if you check gunbroker you can still buy AK steel core, an ammo that has been banned for 20 years for .50 cents a round and no bids on it. That is real steel core ammo too. Are you to going Plinking with .80 cents a round ammo? Most ranges won’t let you shoot steel core ammo so where are you going to shoot it? Bunch of hoopla for nothing. Regular AK ammo has more punch than M855 ammo. And for .23 cents a round too.
