SOG’s Newest Knives and Flashlights

DSCF0572

SOG had their newest knives and flashlights at Industry Day at the Range as well as a few of their popular staples such as their throwing knives, Fling, and their Tactical Tomahawk. Among those available to look at were the Zoom series compact folding knives and the Instinct series wearable fixed blade knives. SOG has a well-deserved reputation for quality, and it’s evident in each of their knives, both those new for 2015 and those that have been around for some time. Their throwing knives are nicely balanced and perfect for improving your knife throwing skills while their wearable and folding knives have a wide variety of uses, and you can be sure they’ll not only get the job done but last for a very long time.

am i the only one who thinks the new sog knives look goofy as hell

    • sianmink

The Zoom is kind of goofy, I like the Instinct a lot though it seems to me it could have been better off with a flat grind. 5Cr15MOV steel isn’t highly regarded though, (its a mainstream kitchen knife steel copied from a German formula) and I’d want better edge retention in a chunky little fixed blade like that.
In all, nothing I’d look twice at.

      • Grindstone50k

Depending on the intent and frequency of use, 5Cr15MOV isn’t that bad.

        • sianmink

Its edge holding isn’t good, sure it’s easy to sharpen, but for that price it seems like I could pick up something in 440C or even VG10. 5Cr15MOV is in the same class as AUS8, putting it solidly in the < $50 range.

Like I said, depending on intent and frequency of use.

But, yeah, $118 is waaaay over-priced.

  • Grindstone50k

5CR15MOV for the Instinct and AUS8 for the Zoom, for those wondering.

  • Waiting for the day when they’ll make knives with powerful flashlights or vice versa. Nonetheless, you can take nothing off these SOG accessories. They look splendidly handy with that lovely grip. Can’t wait to handle one.
