Teaser: Mossberg’s “Big 5” announcement in January

Mossberg sent out the following to select media this week, and they are making an announcement in January on Monday at SHOT Show in Las Vegas. All it has to say is “Five Launches, One Big Event – The Big 5.” Naturally, TFB will be there to cover the announcement.

Mossberg is well-known for its shotguns, but they also make pistols and rifles. I would expect a shotgun announcement or two, but perhaps a centerfire pistol is in the cards?

What would you love to see Mossberg announce? I’m excited to see what TFB readers come up with in the comments!

    “but they also make pistols”

Unless you are letting the cat out of the bag… They do not. They make a stockless version of their AR patterned 22lr gun. Hardly a maker of “pistols”.

But… we can play the guessing game…

    1. Some “themed” version of the 500/590 shotgun. Like Blackwater, Zombine, Chainsaw, and others before it, it’ll sell a couple to people who have no idea how to run a shotgun.

    2. Some version of the 930 that is meant to compete with the Benelli M-whatever and Rem VersaMax. People who 3-gun will buy it as an entry level gun, the people who actually use them hard will eventually sell it and put the money towards a Benelli, FN, or Versamax, or similar. Super bonus points if it has two tubes ala KSG

    3. Let’s say striker fired handgun… why not!?

    4. AR in 300blk or some version of it

    5. AR patterned 12ga. It’ll be basically a 930 that takes 12ga box mags. It’ll suffer from all the issues the rest of those guns do (basically that the soft 12ga rimmed round was never designed to feed from a box mag). It’ll be wildly popular with people you might want to avoid at the range.

Many moons ago, they made a .45acp pistol to compete against the m9 when the military wanted a new pistol

    • Zachary marrs

      Put up pic

      • JumpIf NotZero

Ok, they sort of made a shitty looking pistol a long time ago, and make a stockless AR-themed 22 plinker now… I’m still not sure that counts as a maker of pistols.

But… I had never seen that pic before, so you’re right they did try pistols once.

    • Abram

You sound like a whiny bitch, enamored by your own cleverness.

I’d like to see Mossberg offer more Marinecote options on the MVP rifles. If they can turn out a solid and reliable pistol, all the better.

      • Dan

As much ad he sounds like a guy so full of himself it gives the rest of us cancer, he is actually probably spot on. I don’t expect them to come out with anything revolutionary. I see them jumping on the current bandwagons, maybe a 1911 as their most “wild” departure.

        • JumpIf NotZero

OOOORRRR….. he has experience with broken Mossberg auto shotguns… ๐Ÿ™‚

          • Dan

Oooorrrr that too, your comments do rub me the wrong way at times, but in most cases as much as I want to hate you, you generally seem to know your stuff.

          • JumpIf NotZero

Ha, as good as to seeing eye to eye as I could expect! ๐Ÿ˜€

          • ghost

Except when he thinks you have to turn a shotgun upside down to load it. We all have our faults. I just ignore mine.

  • USMC03Vet

Magazine fed shotgun or else internet meme outrage!

    • Duray

They’ve been making magazine fed shotguns as long as they’ve been around.

  • ghost

Glad I got mine while they are still making shotguns.

  • Phil Hsueh

How about a semi-auto shotgun that can fire as fast the shooter can pull the trigger, unlike the Benelli in one of the earlier articles. That way Slavic shooters can use it to set or beat records without having to curse loudly and throw their shotguns in the air in frustration.

    • Sadler

The 930 can, according to Jerry Miculek. Though, he is sponsored by Mossberg, so I’d take the endorsement with a grain of salt.

      • Torn

Have never known Jerry to fudge anything, doesn’t need to.

  • SD3

    Howz’bout a tube-fed, bolt action pistol in 9×18 Makarov?

Don’t act like you weren’t thinking the same thing…

  • echelon

Maybe they can make a Saiga/VEPR alternative here in the US that doesn’t cost a bajillion dollars…

  • jamezb

    A lever action .410?
Even better a box mag lever action, in .410, 20 ga. and 12 ga!!

    A .45/.410 pump pistol with a 12″ bbl.
    A modern .22 magnum semi-auto rifle with a 10 + round detachable mag…
hmmm let me think some more on this…

    • JumpIf NotZero

Box mag lever action in .410…. Oh you must work high up at Mossberg! ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Raven

Lever-action .410 with 3″ chambers on an overbuilt action might be neat. Make it a beefed-up 464 capable of handling ~62k PSI and you’ve got some very interesting possibilities, namely the fact that it’ll run every rimmed .45 out there from .45 Auto Rim to .460S&W. And I bet the wildcatters could have some fun working up moose loads with 3″ brass .410 cases and hardcast flat-nose bullets.

  • Jason Wimbiscus

I’d like to see them offer their 464 in .357 mag, .44 mag, and . 45 Colt.

    • ozzallos .

  • Adam aka eddie d.

Would be nice to see a 930 version factory equipped with the new Mesa Urbino 930 stock.

    Quite possible too.

They should also update the factory polymer handguard with some short rail sections
like on the hatsan Escort MPA (though this one only has a bottom rail).
Maybe an externally threaded muzzle too (for the King Armory brakes), but that’s just wishful thinking.

As for the rifles, I guess they’ll continue expanding the MVP range,
probably a 20″ threaded heavy barrel in .308, because as of now this option
    is missing from their lineup.

Right now it’s either a 20″ medium without threaded muzzle or a 16″(?) threaded heavy profile,
if my memory serves me well.
Also, I find it quite probable that they’ll introduce a model with MDT’s LSS chassis.

Remington and other companies pulled the same one with the 700 action.
Personally, I find it a nice idea, it would be a higher end version of the budget oriented
    FLEX models.

  • J.T.

My guess is one will be an MVP that is scaled up to .308 with at least one version of the gun set up as a scout rifle. Another possibility is a .308 AR. Possibly a pistol version of their AR set up to use an arm brace.

    • Dan

What ever it is I don’t think I’m going to be falling out of my chair then running down to the LGS to throw money at them to have it.

  • Duray

Maybe a 4 shot break open .22 derringer?

    • BamBam

Ha Ha that is a good one!

  • herb

A double 500, that is two mirror-image 500 receivers milled in one block, dual tubes, barrels, triggers, shared stock.

A new huge spikey muzzle device for reasons. Yep, reasons.

Front handgrip with dual horizontal grips extending perpendicular the barrel, one on each side, forming a cross-shape. Playfully stated to be for hunting vampires.

A scaled down 28 gauge autoloader that weighs 3 lbs, made in Turkey

A 22 lr lever action Steve McQueen pistol

    • Ethan

“A new huge spikey muzzle device for reasons. Yep, reasons.”

LOL!! There must be a reason… right?

  • Roadkill

How about a 18.5inch 590a1 with a magazine tube flush with the barrel for 6rds capacity plus bayonet lug?

However, when I saw the ‘BIG 5’ I thought they might be making some dangerous game rifles.

  • gunsandrockets

Pump action bufferless AR pistol in .300 AAC?

  • KAS

Hopefully, they are going to announce that they miss selling Galil’s and Uzi’s, so they are going to start producing them domestically.

  • Shadowhawk

Bullpup, Magazine fed, semiauto shotgun & Bullpup, magazine fed, pump shotgun.

  • Manfredi1

How ’bout a 4-barreled shotgun to one-up Chiappa?

  • LeadFarmer

I hear Mossy is about to go hard after Remington’s market share since they are tanking everything and making some ridiculous business decisions. I found the Freedom Group conspiracy theories hard to believe at first, but the more things I see it really does seem like upper management is trying to put Remington, Marlin, Bushmaster, etc. out of business by changing public opinion of them so no one will miss them or notice. They either are trying to run them in the tank or they are HONESTLY the worst group of CEOs to ever run a major company. Sad, especially with such iconic names… Expect to see Mossberg roll out something comparable to the 700s etc and grab some attention.

  • loopydupe

    Lever action MVP?

    • Ethan

That would actually be pretty slick.

  • TDog

A better bullpup shotgun than the one they turned out previously would be nice.
