A reader brought to our attention this very interesting idea. It is currently still in the prototype (and there is a working prototype) stage, and it looks like the innovator is trying to gauge interest (for a potential crowdsourcing campaign). There is a thread on Pirate 4×4 (of all places) discussing it (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/outdoor-sports-recreation/1452801-my-quick-detach-rifle-mount-design.html).
Basically it is a quick detach system that works with the picatinny rail on your weapon. You affix the “male” coupler to the rail, and it mates with a “female” mounting system which can be attached to pretty much anything. There are a few demo videos of the prototype (you can click the youtube profile on the below to get to the others):
I really am intrigued by this idea, and I haven’t seen anything like it before. I’ve attached weapons with rare-earth magnets but that it about as crazy as I have attempted. This appears to be a pretty solid mount that also attaches and detaches with ease. I’d really like to see how it holds up to mounting in a vehicle over rough terrain.
I personally would back a project like this. What are your thoughts, dear readers? Can you envision a use? Is there anything similar out there?
