Canadian Journalists for Free Expression have a new ad campaign. According to Indulgd, CJFE is trying to bring attention to the risks journalists make and how dangerous it is. They laid out camera equipment in the shape of firearms and a rocket launcher.

The ads have even inspired photographers to create their own versions.

I wonder if they got their slogan from the Battletech Cartoon…

“Ill shoot you with my canon!”

A little story I know no one cares about, when I was in my early 20’s I had a short gig as a wedding photographer, and I had cards that read “marrs photography, let me shoot all of you with my canons”

      Good times

    wow

  • If journalists consider information to be their “ammunition” (ie taking sides in a conflict), they shouldn’t be surprised when they get their heads lopped off. Tool up or shut up.

  • The Forty ‘Twa

The Ministry of Defence Police here in the UK are running a recruiting campaign at the moment where they use assorted bits and bobs most people would carry on them each day (keys, wallet, phone etc) arranged in the shape of an MP7 as the main image. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find a photo of it online at the minute.

    “Information is ammunition”
This is why information warfare exists.
And why governments don’t like civilians who know too much.

  • Georgfelis

As I recall, in combat zones there have been more than one camera crew that has hefted their shoulder-mounted video camera up, leaned out the window to take video of a tank rumbling down the road, wondered why the main barrel was tracking their location…. and then their families got a polite telegram. Beehive rounds have no ability to discern shoulder-mounted cameras held by civilians from shoulder-mounted RPGs held by terrorists in civilian garb.

Tankers first rule, “if it glitters and shines it’s optics, if it’s optics it’s an anti tank weapon” rule number two is “shoot optics first, fast and often till it don’t glitter or shine anymore”.

Rule 3 is apparently “Don’t ask why we’re in this godforsaken position in the first place, or why anyone would want to either film or shoot us, just obey orders.”

Survival often precludes asking such questions.
The old saw about draining the swamp, being “When you are up to your ast in alligators it’s hard to remember the original idea was to drain the swamp” having been on the opposite side of the tankers view I found to ask usually took too long.
          Rockets Up!

The next war for freedom against tyranny is already being waged globally in journalism. If people are smart, it won’t need to be waged with firearms.

I don’t always have faith in people being smart.

Why warn them, let them go ahead and make that fatal mistake.

There are pictures and videos on the web that show what happens if a tank, AFV or even a single Infantryman is targeted successfully by an Anti mechanized weapon or a sniper.
In Combat, anything that resembles an anti tank weapon, is the primary target it has the ability to do great very accurate and focused harm.
Normally the only warning is that sight, of the blot of dark, the on the shoulder box, the silhouette of a tripod and that glass glitter, to hesitate means dying a messy and horrible death.
I am not going to burn alive in a steel box for anybodies Pulitzer prize even if I have to shoot a newsie by accident, “Sorry about that shat Chief” missed him by this much.
Newsies don’t know and don’t care, if it looks like a threat, it will be considered a threat and dealt with in haste.
