“Ofificial” bullpup AK? Mall ninjas are going to have a blast!

    • Esh325

They didn’t say whether it would be an “AK” design or not. It could be a completely new rifle like the H&K G11 for we know.

      • Anonymoose

Or a bullpup AN-94 with STANAG rails and the ability to switch between 5.45×39, 5.56×45, and 7.62×39, among other things. :3c

        • dreamcrusher

As great as it would be, the amount of parts you would have to change along with the an-94’s higher tendency to jam I doubt it.

          • Anonymoose

Even so, I still wish they would make an “AN-13.” :C

        • Esh325

I don’t think switching calibers on the AN-94 would be feasible as the barrel reciprocates.

“…along with a new cartridge for it.”

    • Molot already has an AK in 6.5 Grendel. In addition to the obvious benefits of the caliber, straight 6.5 Gren mags would make more sense in a bullpup configuration than the traditional AK banana (which would be more in the way of the pistol grip as in the image of the bullpup AK below).

      We can only hope…

      • Esh325

I’m pretty sure the 6.5 grendel MOLOT AK is dead, or never existed in the first place. MOLOT’s website doesn’t even list it.

        • And this is Izhmash, not Molot.

          • Esh325

True. I think they are planning something a bit more ambitious than just using the 6.5 grendel.

          • milo

perhaps they’d use the 6x49mm UMG that they made. http://world.guns.ru/machine/rus/unified-caliber-machine-gun-6-mm-e.html would at least make sense for the DMR version of the bullpup. all in all i wonder if it’ll have features similar to the A-91, if so then id like it.

      • Anonymoose

Can’t 6.5 Grendel be used in 7.62×39 mags already though?

  • Mandarin

Interesting. Crossing my fingers for a PDW type setting with 5.45×18 or 7.62×25, huehuehue.

    • Esh325

By their description of the cartridge, it most likely won’t be that. They said “extended range, accuracy, and stopping power”.

  • Possible Idea based on the BARS system? Image from Flikr

  • mig1nc

    My guess… 6.5x39mm

    • Komrad

6.5 Grendel is already indirectly based off of 7.62×39 (via .220 Russian), so that would be fairly redundant.
I’d be more interested in a 6mm or 7mm offering or maybe a larger bore offering (8x39mm or something).

      • kyle

Just go 9×39 and start importing 9A91 clones for AS-VAL conversions.

  • bbmg

Will the new cartridge still have a brass/steel case, be filled with nitrocellulose powder ignited by a percussion primer to propell a metal jacketed projectile with a steel/lead/alloy core?

    If so, why bother?

Could it be that Izhmash are jealous of KBP’s awesome ASh-12.7 bullpup and want something that will compete, perhaps chambered for the same 12.7 x 55mm cartridge?

    • Esh325

Not sure. I’m guessing it will be a intermediate round. It would be nice to see Izmash take it a step further by introducing the new round in caseless or telescoped cases. I don’t believe Izmash is making this by any request of the Russian military.

      • Izhmash is pretty conservative and it’s R&D isn’t well funded. Telescoped ammunition is possible, but they definitely haven’t put the money into making functional caseless ammunition or buying the rights to produce the more recent versions the US has been working on.

  • They can not even ship plane jane IZ-xxx rifles right now, much less AK-108’s and AK12’s.. I am not holding my breath.

    • erwos

I’m glad someone else brought this up. I’m still waiting for my Saiga-9 and Saiga-107, and they’re promising a bullpup, too?

Get it together, Izhmash. No wonder you’re going out of business.

      • Lolinski

It is not Izmash who are restricting import in the US, so it is silly to blame them.

        • Nothing is restricting them from importing saiga rifles.. They just are not sending them.

          • Esh325

Yeah, nobody is stopping them. Izmash has a lot of internal problems.

Ukraine did the same made the Vepr rifle for its Spec Ops. never took off as a infantry arm. AK bullpups have very bad ergonomics and other issues may be a R&D research but I do not see the AK-74 going anywhere soon. Same is what happened in the Ukraine.

It’ll be interesting if they wipe the dust off those Korobov designs and build them using today’s technology. They had problems but it was mostly because the designs were way to ahead of what Russians, maybe even the Americans and the rest of NATO, could probably build at the time.

Next generation as in post WW2 design?
