Anschutz MSR RX22: Modern Sporting Rifle
Earlier this year Anschutz unveiled their first tactical-style semi-automatic target rifle. The Anschutz MSR (Modern Sporting Rifle) RX 22 is clearly inspired by the AR-15 design. It has an upper aluminum receiver and lower polymer receiver. The folding stock and handguard is made from an attractive grey laminate wood. UPDATE: The MSR RX22 is a variant of the ISSC MSR MK22.
The upper receiver is grooved for Anschutz 6834 front and rear target sights but also has a picatinny rails for mounting optics. The charging handle can be can be moved into 6 different positions (you can see the holes for the charging handle above the handguard in the photo above).
I really like this design and in typical Anschutz style I am sure is it super accurate, which will appeal to benchrest shooters in the USA.

really does not matter; not much interesting ever comes to my part of the coumtry (midwest)
I actually like the look of the stock. I wish someone would make an M16 style stock and handguards out of the same color wood that would be neat.
whats with the inclusion of wood? looks stupid and probably serves no purpose.
man it must suck to get corrected that much :/ thx again for your daily and interesting posts about the industry and its products
how many more people are gunna say how it looks like a fn scar
the gun I think has a .22 AR style blow back like a AR. Dosnt matter another over priced 10/22!
Correct me if I am mistaken, but is this not modeled somewhat after the recently introduced FN SSR and FN SCAR?
That could be the ugliest gun I have ever seen.
And not so ugly its cute.
Just ugly.
Charles
looks like a .22 scar. SCAR-RL (really light) anyone?
Seems to be more based off of the FN SCAR than an AR-15 design…
I like it, I would like to see 17 HM2 and HMR uppers, and a 22 WMR upper as well (looks like the mag well might be big enough). But I think i’ll just stick to customizing my 10-22 if the price is going to be anything comparable to other Anshutz products.
Looks like a .22 cal AR-15 and G-36 combined.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder on this one IMHO. Not a fan of the wood accents/color. I just added a free floating Blackhawk Axiom RF stock to my 10/22 for $60 (Amazon). Dropped the weight of my setup to below 5lb with optic.
Looks more SCAR inspired than AR.
this is the uglyest weapon i’ve ever seen
“The Anschutz MSR (Modern Sporting Rifle) RX 22 is clearly inspired by the AR-15 design. “
Don’t you mean ‘clearly inspired by the FN SCAR design.’ ?
are you sure this isnt inspired by the scar?
Any info on pricing?
Inspired by the ar? More like a scar if you ask me.
Inspired by the ar? More like a scar if you ask me
Very neat and definitely good for some range “wow” factor. I wonder what the advantage over a “built” 10/22 will be.
Looks more SCAR inspired than AR-15 inspired, in my opinion
“RX 22 is clearly inspired by the AR-15 design. “
No, it’s clearly inspired by the SCAR.
Completely let down by that stock hinge, looks like it came directly from a cheap door!
Looks like they are using a ISSC MK22 FN SCAR clone as a base or somebody else is an OEM supplier for both and they are rebranding it (like Umarex does for H&K and Colt).

Overall very interesting to see the traditional Anschutz come out with something like that. The laminate stock is a trip too.
No comment about Anschutz siding with the gun grabbers?
Lest we forget.
DO NOT BUY from Anschutz unless you like the idea of your guns being deactivated by radio remote control.
Nothing more than an ISSC MK22 that has been pimped out by Anschutz. New barrel, stock, wood in place of 1913 handguard rails, and target sights with a short sight radius.
Its not really inspired by the AR15 design directly. It looks like its based on the ISSC MK22, which is a .22 copy if the FN SCAR L. http://www.issc-austria.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4&Itemid=4
Hmmm, wonder if we will see one in .223?
“The Anschutz MSR (Modern Sporting Rifle) RX 22 is clearly inspired by the AR-15 design. “
With all due respect, sir, I see far more of the SCAR than of the old AR-15 on that target rifle.
Looks more inspired by the SCAR than the AR-15 to me.
“RX 22 is clearly inspired by the AR-15 design.”
…What?
Also, holy fuck that rifle looks ugly.
Looks fantastic! Any word on when it will show up in the US?
AR-15? That’s a SCAR ripoff. Look at all the firing controls.
Sure looks like a SCAR to me. Also it’s a little disappointing to see Anschutz jumping on the “tactical” .22 bandwagon.
Is Anschutz still supporting that stupid electronic lock out system in all its guns?
where is the link to the manufacturer?
You usually put that up, or is it not on their site yet?
Looks more like it was inspired by the FN SCAR.
That’s a new twist! I learned to shoot on an Anschutz back in high school, which probably spoiled me for a .22…
If I had a need for a target rifle this would definitely be worth checking out.
AR 15 lower. The upper is SCAR with tones of ACR in the lines. All those CR’s are actually more alike than different. Extruding an upper from one die to house similar components keeps them in the same envelope from the process. They all use a monolithic design, the AR doesn’t.
They blew the stock artistically, the pierced design looks more sniper/range space gun, not combat, and doesn’t tie in to the combat look.
At the right price, they’ll move quickly off the shelves. The HK repro was going great until the suppressor snafu.
And there you go:

“… For an austrian company ESC developed the small caliber pistol M22 and the small caliber rifle MK22. … Along with Anschütz the MK22 has been converted to the new Anschütz MSR RX22 rifle…”
It looks like MK22 from ISSC…
I find that look like a sig 550 more than a ar 15!
I think you meant to say, ‘Inspired by the SCAR’
Hi, I believe this design is actually based on the MK22, (looking like the SCAR) which is a GSG5 dressed in a different way. Best regards.
Looks more like the SCAR to me, check out the forward sling attachment loops….
It looks a lot more clearly inspired by the SCAR than the AR-15.
“The Anschutz MSR (Modern Sporting Rifle) RX 22 is clearly inspired by the AR-15 design.”
I don’t know… looks more like an FN SCAR to me. Which of course, was inspired by the AR-15 itself, so by proxy, I guess the RX 22 could be said to be inspired by the AR-15.
Very sweet rifle though. Looks like it would be perfect for my .22 silhouette competitions.
Are you sure you don’t mean inapired by the SCAR design? The laminate stock just looks odd on this type of rifle.
Cool gun…must be extremely accurate !..as all Anchutzs are.
Only thing I don’t like very much is the laminate wooden stock! I think it would look better if it has a polymer stock!
Take a good look at the AR-15. Then at the FN SCAR. Then at this thing again. What is it inspired by now? Of course, SCAR ergo’s are inspired by the AR-15, so I’ll give you that.
Looks more like a SCAR to me.
This is based on the ISSC MK22 rifle.
SCAR inspired – not AR15
Looks pretty much like that one:
http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/products_id/5589
only with an Anschütz branding and a fugly buttstock plus short mag for looking sporter-like.
Military style selfloading rifles with a cartridge case length below 40mm are not approved for sport shooting in Germany.
BTW – remember Anschütz mentioned here before marketing a “smart gun” concept along with german “Armatix” company who are known for not supporting gun ownership. So I would report a little bit less enthusiastic…
I think it looks more like the SCAR than an AR15
I don’t mind the hodgepodge color schemes on prototypes, but on a production rifle, ugh. That’s just an ugly gun.
Looks more like a SCAR than an AR to me.
If someone wonders why its so damn ugly:
We in Germany have a law that forbids german sport-shooters semi-auto rifles to resemble a full auto rifle, if the cartridges brass is shorter than 40mm.
Thats why we can’t have nice things, like the GSG-5 , Colt M16/M4 Rifles, and the GSG-47 in 22lr.
It’s okay to buy a .223 AR 15 and put a 22lr upper on it.
As Berlins former policepresident said: “Big parts of the German gun laws don’t seem to have been influenced by thinking humans”
I assume you mean more like the FN SCAR series of rifles?
It looks more influenced by a SCAR than an AR. Hell the stock even looks like a wooden version of the stock on the MK20.
Looks like the barrel is not a free float, and the side folding stock may get in the way of the controls.
What does this have over a well built .22 in a true AR pattern?
Inspired the the AR-15? It looks more like a SCAR, to me. Either way, it doesn’t matter to me. Unless they make it in other (more practical) calibers, and have an affordable price set for it, I won’t be buying one.
