Anschutz MSR RX22: Modern Sporting Rifle

Earlier this year Anschutz unveiled their first tactical-style semi-automatic target rifle. The Anschutz MSR (Modern Sporting Rifle) RX 22 is clearly inspired by the AR-15 design. It has an upper aluminum receiver and lower polymer receiver. The folding stock and handguard is made from an attractive grey laminate wood. UPDATE: The MSR RX22 is a variant of the ISSC MSR MK22.

The upper receiver is grooved for Anschutz 6834 front and rear target sights but also has a picatinny rails for mounting optics. The charging handle can be can be moved into 6 different positions (you can see the holes for the charging handle above the handguard in the photo above).

I really like this design and in typical Anschutz style I am sure is it super accurate, which will appeal to benchrest shooters in the USA.

Thanks to zbranekvalitne.cz for the photo.

I actually like the look of the stock. I wish someone would make an M16 style stock and handguards out of the same color wood that would be neat.

I like it, I would like to see 17 HM2 and HMR uppers, and a 22 WMR upper as well (looks like the mag well might be big enough). But I think i’ll just stick to customizing my 10-22 if the price is going to be anything comparable to other Anshutz products.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder on this one IMHO. Not a fan of the wood accents/color. I just added a free floating Blackhawk Axiom RF stock to my 10/22 for $60 (Amazon). Dropped the weight of my setup to below 5lb with optic.

AR 15 lower. The upper is SCAR with tones of ACR in the lines. All those CR’s are actually more alike than different. Extruding an upper from one die to house similar components keeps them in the same envelope from the process. They all use a monolithic design, the AR doesn’t.

They blew the stock artistically, the pierced design looks more sniper/range space gun, not combat, and doesn’t tie in to the combat look.

At the right price, they’ll move quickly off the shelves. The HK repro was going great until the suppressor snafu.

    SCAR inspired – not AR15
Looks pretty much like that one:
    http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/products_id/5589
only with an Anschütz branding and a fugly buttstock plus short mag for looking sporter-like.
Military style selfloading rifles with a cartridge case length below 40mm are not approved for sport shooting in Germany.
BTW – remember Anschütz mentioned here before marketing a “smart gun” concept along with german “Armatix” company who are known for not supporting gun ownership. So I would report a little bit less enthusiastic…

If someone wonders why its so damn ugly:

We in Germany have a law that forbids german sport-shooters semi-auto rifles to resemble a full auto rifle, if the cartridges brass is shorter than 40mm.

Thats why we can’t have nice things, like the GSG-5 , Colt M16/M4 Rifles, and the GSG-47 in 22lr.

It’s okay to buy a .223 AR 15 and put a 22lr upper on it.

As Berlins former policepresident said: “Big parts of the German gun laws don’t seem to have been influenced by thinking humans”

I actually like the look of the stock. I wish someone would make an M16 style stock and handguards out of the same color wood that would be neat.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but is this not modeled somewhat after the recently introduced FN SSR and FN SCAR?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder on this one IMHO. Not a fan of the wood accents/color. I just added a free floating Blackhawk Axiom RF stock to my 10/22 for $60 (Amazon). Dropped the weight of my setup to below 5lb with optic.

I like it, I would like to see 17 HM2 and HMR uppers, and a 22 WMR upper as well (looks like the mag well might be big enough). But I think i’ll just stick to customizing my 10-22 if the price is going to be anything comparable to other Anshutz products.

Take a good look at the AR-15. Then at the FN SCAR. Then at this thing again. What is it inspired by now? Of course, SCAR ergo’s are inspired by the AR-15, so I’ll give you that.

Cool gun…must be extremely accurate !..as all Anchutzs are.
Only thing I don’t like very much is the laminate wooden stock! I think it would look better if it has a polymer stock!

“The Anschutz MSR (Modern Sporting Rifle) RX 22 is clearly inspired by the AR-15 design.”

I don’t know… looks more like an FN SCAR to me. Which of course, was inspired by the AR-15 itself, so by proxy, I guess the RX 22 could be said to be inspired by the AR-15.

Very sweet rifle though. Looks like it would be perfect for my .22 silhouette competitions.

Looks like the barrel is not a free float, and the side folding stock may get in the way of the controls.

What does this have over a well built .22 in a true AR pattern?

If someone wonders why its so damn ugly:

We in Germany have a law that forbids german sport-shooters semi-auto rifles to resemble a full auto rifle, if the cartridges brass is shorter than 40mm.

Thats why we can’t have nice things, like the GSG-5 , Colt M16/M4 Rifles, and the GSG-47 in 22lr.

It’s okay to buy a .223 AR 15 and put a 22lr upper on it.

As Berlins former policepresident said: “Big parts of the German gun laws don’t seem to have been influenced by thinking humans”
