0What makes this tragic event even more unusual is the area in which the plane went down. According to the LA Times article reprinted in my local newspaper, the plane crashed near the Katyn forest. For those unfamiliar with that dreadful place, the Katyn forest is infamous for the 1940 massacre of many thousands of Polish POW’s by the Soviet NKVD. They were captured the year before when the Soviets invaded eastern Poland just as the Nazis invaded from the West. The irony of this plane crash must cause even more pain for the Polish nation.

0It’s actually happened before. In 1994 the heads of state of both Rwanda and Burundi died in the same plane crash. Foul play was suspected, but I don’t think ever proven.
My condolences.

0Bill: my understanding is that they were actually flying to that area to celebrate improved relations between Poland and Russia on the anniversary of the slaughter. The irony is biting, and runs deep. Condolences to our Polish brothers and sisters.

0according to news reports in both western and russian media at this point they are calling it human error, reportedly the pilot was attempting to land in heavy fog, down to ground level, and on his fourth attempt he came in too low and hit trees and crashed. its still too early to judge, wait until the investigation is complete.

0@flakt: The Polish president was involved in a plane crash and passed away. There were something to the tune of 130 other people who died in the crash.
0
0@flakt, what Jim said, also the plane had many other important Polish government officials including Chief-of-Army.
