TFB Armorer's Bench: How I Make Dummy Rounds

Welcome everyone to the  TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb below, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article, I decided to add to my pile of dummy rounds and show you folks one way to make them. There are multiple ways and they all have pros and cons. I would not call this gunsmithing by any means but it’s gunsmithing adjacent. Sometimes testing a firearm with live ammunition is not possible or necessary. I have always found it convenient to have a safe quick way to test feeding and chambering. I find myself wishing I had more cartridge types but I’m at the point where I don’t feel like overpaying for a few mass-produced ones. That being said, let’s dive into my solution and how I make dummy rounds!

Is A Global Gunpowder Shortage Coming In 2024?

Before we get started I’d like to point out as of right now this is purely speculation based off of what we’re seeing currently in the market. A few days ago at the start of December, Vista Outdoors, the principal owner of several popular brands of ammunition, powders, and primers, announced a price increase due to begin at the start of 2024. This increase is in reaction to what Vista Outdoors calls an unprecedented demand for and anticipated global shortage of gunpowder. The full press release has been posted below.

How Many Guns Can One Person Own?

Just for the record, no, I haven’t started writing for the mainstream media, and if someone asked me “How pro-gun are you?”, I’d show them a photo of a battleship. We’ve all had a good laugh whenever the media announces that someone was found with “an arsenal” that included two pistols, a rifle, a scope and (gasp) 1000 rounds of ammo. However, the question still remains, how many guns can one person own? I suggest there are several limits – let’s explore.

Fixing My Stupid Mistakes With The RCBS Stuck Case Remover

We all do stupid things sometimes. In my case, I do the same stupid things repeatedly. In recent months I managed to get two pieces of .300 Win Mag brass stuck in two separate dies. This was both embarrassing and was getting in the way of making more ammo for my Winchester 70 sniper homage. Fortunately, RCBS offers a stuck case tool for this job. Let’s see how it works, and if it works.

TFB Weekly Web Deals 49: Are Primers Finally Coming Back?

Welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 49! COVID hit the firearms industry pretty hard but I think the most frustrating part about all of the shortages for me personally was the quick disappearance of primers and other reloading components. It didn’t take long into 2020 for me to quickly burn through nearly my entire inventory of reloading components and then I was left hunting at various local gun shows for overpriced trays of pistol primers. Long story short, I eventually gave up because it was much easier and far less expensive just to buy bulk ammo when I could find it. Fast forward to today and I’m now starting to notice a handful of primers show up and actually stay in stock. They’re wildly overpriced compared to the prices we paid even just a few short years ago, but at least they’re available again. Today is mostly a reloading-focused roundup so hopefully you guys can find something below that’ll help you fire that rusty reloading press back up.

Wheelgun Wednesday: The Pros And Cons Of Speedloaders

Thanks for joining us on another TFB Wheelgun Wednesday, where we cover all topics relating to revolvers. As with most things, it’s good to take an objective look at whether our tools are effective or not, so on occasion, we’ve been breaking down the pros and cons of various revolver loading devices. We’ve already covered moon clips and speed strips, but this time we’ll take a look at the pros and cons of speedloaders, which are perhaps the most well-known revolver loading device. Let’s dig in.
