POTD: Remington MSR (Modular Sniper Rifle) in Afghanistan (2013)
TFB’s Photo Of The Day. We go back in time, to Afghanistan in 2013. Above we see Spc. Daniel S. Kennedy, from Tuttle, Oklahoma, with 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, as he provides security as Afghan Border Police (ABP) break ground on a new checkpoint, in the Spin Boldak district, Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The ABP moved to the new location to block an insurgent infiltration route. He’s using the Remington MSR bolt-action rifle. The MSR came out as a winner in the USSOCOM Precision Sniper Rifle competition but was later excluded due to non-compliance.
Remington MSR: The Special Forces MK 21 Sniper Rifle
In 2009 the Precision Sniper Rifle program gave birth to the Remington MSR, a modular sniper rifle that was capable of getting good hit out to 1500 meters. In this episode of TFB TV, Patrick takes a closer look at the same rifle that he used when he shot the man-sized target at 1760 yards. The Remington MSR won the Precision Sniper Rifle competition and became the Mark 21 sniper rifle that was adopted by the US Special Forces as well as special forces units in Brazil and Columbia.
Shooting 1760 Yards (One Mile) With The Remington MSR
Shooting 1760 yards (one mile) is not anything to sniff at. 1760 yards is a rather long way off for even the most experienced of shooters much less a shooter who has only shot past 1000 yards once prior. In this episode of TFB TV, Patrick takes a Remington MSR on loan from DSG Arms out to Outback Precision Rifle Club to get some expert instruction from Geordie. With proper instruction and a skilled spotter, long range shooting can be a very rewarding shooting discipline.
Remington Modular Sniper Rifle Review
The PSR – Precision Sniper Rifle – program has its roots in a 2008 U.S. military market survey, but it really came to life in January of 2009. It was USSOCOM that made the call to replace spec-ops sniper’s current bolt-action sniper rifles, and they wanted it done with a single bolt-action rifle chambered in a Magnum round. Of course, their requirements were a bit more specific than just that.
