Depending on your personality, upgrading a brand new pistol is either the very first thing you want to do or the last. Trust me on this one, make it your first upgrade. A few years ago I invested in both a Volquartsen hammer and sear for my MKIII and, before the replacement, I would have sworn that the stock trigger was already match quality. After all, Primary Weapon Systems (PWS) announced the retirement of the straight pull rifles and receivers a couple of years ago, leaving myself and others to scramble for the remaining guns. My project “spark plug” – making a charger style pistol with a Summit receiver – has unfortunately stalled for the moment, due mostly to time constraints.

It has been a few months since the original announcement of the factory Ruger MKIV recall. As you may remember, Ruger discovered an issue with the sear in which the trigger could be partially depressed and the safety engaged but the gun could still fire. The Newport, NH based company did the right thing and notified everyone affected to sign up for the fix and await further instructions. Unfortunately, it was not just individuals that were inconvenienced by the news – dealers, distributors and manufacturers had to alter their sales plans based on the recall announcement.

Rimfire rifle and pistol maker Volquartsen has announced the release of an upper receiver for Ruger’s recently released ( and recalled) MKIV rimfire pistol. Appropriately named the Volquartsen MKIV Competition receiver, the setup comes in a handful of lengths as well as sight and muzzle attachment options.

Why add a stainless steel version of the match grade Al Scorpion? I asked the same question. Apparently many shooters prefer the feel of a heavier weight pistol over the aluminum version. Also, some owners wanted a fully stainless gun rather than an hard anodized frame upper. Either way, functionality and accuracy will remain the same for both versions.

The good people at Volquartsen Firearms are teasing a new version of their sleek Scorpion rimfire pistol. Chambered in .22 Magnum and featuring a unique barrel style, the new Scorpion appears to share some of the same features as the current Volquartsen pistols.
