[SHOT 2018] VLTOR's New 9mm gas-op OR blowback PCC upper receivers and other cool concepts

Stopping by VLTOR’s booth, they showed me a cool new development of theirs.  On the exterior, it looked to be just another pistol caliber AR.  VLTOR explained to me however, that their PCC MUR upper receiver has the capability to accommodate either gas operated or blowback bolts, depending on what the customer wants (even if it’s both!). The uppers feature a cam path cut that can be used when in DI mode.  The brass deflector on the outside is also attached via hex screw, and does not interfere at all with accessories mounted on the upper rail.    The example guns they had these on were configured as a 9mm PCC and an extremely compact 9mm “Truck Gun” pistol with brace.  Lowers and bolts were from Quarter Circle 10.

Gun Review: MGS' The Citizen Rifle AR-15

When Phil told me I would be getting another AR-15 in for review, I found myself dreading the arrival of yet another black rifle. In my mind, there is only so much that you can do with the AR-15 platform that would come even remotely close to impressing me. Once the MGS Citizen Rifle showed up at my FFL, a quick glance over the rifle revealed that while it was a very nice collection of parts, the only clue that the rifle held a secret power was the rifle length gas tube stuck to a 16″ Criterion 1:8″ twist barrel.

M-LOK Outselling KeyMod about 3 to 1

Fascinating. Despite being the “younger” universal mounting system out there, MagPul’s M-LOK standard is outselling KeyMod at a rate of about 3 to 1. According to my good friend Matt over at Jerking the Trigger, customers are simply putting more money into the M-LOK standard than KeyMod.

Build Or Buy Your Next AR ?

When I first started shooting AR’s I was more than satisfied to buy one off the shelf. In the last few years I was leaning more and more toward building my own. What I really wanted was an AR that I built using parts I thought to be some of the best on the market. I also wanted the satisfaction of building it with my own hands and the feeling of accomplishment that goes with it.

Gun Review: VLTOR TS3 Carbine

VLTOR has built quite a name for themselves by producing quality products for the firearm industry for quite a while, and we here at The Firearm Blog were very excited when we learned that they would now be producing their own rifle to sell in house (albeit using some parts procured from other outfits). The VLTOR rifle debuted on the popular History Channel program “Top Shot” where contestants used the rifle in fierce competition. The rifle was aptly named the “TS3” to mark its premiere on Top Shot season 3. According to the VLTOR website, “The TS3 is actually the result of several different technologies that were originally developed for other specialized weapon applications: The rigid polylithic upper receiver offers remarkable stability, strength and optics mounting solutions; the improved “A5” buffer and recoil system further add to the weapon’s reliability and accuracy, while reducing recoil and making the weapon more controllable; and finally, the exclusive enhancements of the Vltor lower receiver and stock assembly make what was one of the most ergonomic platforms in history even more comfortable and practical to shoot.”

Gun Review: The VLTOR AUG A3

The Steyr AUG has been around for quite a while. It was designed in the 1970’s, an era where terrific advances in special effects and movie making technology led to some of the most spectacularly corny science fiction movies of all time. Consequently the AUG looks like an Austrian engineer went to his local cinema on all of his days off and was inspired. Even today the AUG is a bizarre looking firearm, and I can only imagine the reaction of folks back then when it was introduced (maybe some guys will be nice enough to chime in on the comments section and share with us some of their initial opinions). The AUG made use of polymers wherever possible and its bullpup configuration was by no means a new idea, but it certainly went mainstream with the AUG.
