Theodore Roosevelt Revolver Sells for Big Money
In the pantheon of larger-than-life characters from America’s Old West era, few loom larger than Theodore Roosevelt. Prior to his two terms as the 26th US President, from 1901 to 1909, Roosevelt discovered and embraced the Wild West lifestyle, establishing and operating a cattle ranch in North Dakota. In spite of his New York socialite roots, TR learned to cowboy, rope, ride, hunt, and more in the rough country around the Little Missouri river. These experiences served him well when he formed the first volunteer US Cavalry regiment, the Rough Riders, at the outset of the Spanish-American War in 1898. At this time, he was gifted a Smith & Wesson single-action revolver. Rock Island Auction recently sold this historic firearm at auction (along with numerous other interesting pieces), and as you might expect for such a storied gun, it fetched quite a sum – $910,625.

Wheelgun Wednesday: Theodore Roosevelt's S&W Model No. 3 Revolver
The 26th President of the United States of America, Theodore Roosevelt, was quite fond of both Colt revolvers and Winchester lever-action rifles. However, during the summer of 1898, then Assistant Secretary of the Navy (under President William McKinley), resigned from his prestigious position to instead be part of the action in the upcoming Spanish-American war. Roosevelt was officially commissioned as a Lt. Colonel for the 1st U.S. Volunteer Calvary and eventually traveled to San Antonio, Texas to train the Rough Riders. It was during this time that factory records show that this Smith & Wesson Model No. 3 revolver was shipped to him with detailing and engraving purportedly done by Gustave Young. This historically significant wheelgun is now being offered up as part of Rock Island Auction Company’s Premier Firearms Auction #87.

Wheelgun Wednesday: New Life For An Old Smith & Wesson 64
A while back, we featured the work of a French gunsmith, Cedric, on TFB’s Wheelgun Wednesday, in which he had worked his magic on a Smith & Wesson 617. Well, for one of his latest projects, he souped up a Smith & Wesson 64 revolver for a retired police officer that carried this revolver for years. Cedric said that this project involved a lot of polishing, adding a single gas port to the barrel, and replacing the rubber grips with the ever-beautiful Nill wood grips.

Wheelgun Wednesday: Wild Bill Hickok's Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 Old Army Revolver
In one of the previous installments of our Wheelgun Wednesday weekly article series, we took a look at a Colt 1851 Navy revolver attributed to Wild Bill Hickok that was consigned to May 2022 Rock Island Premier Firearms Auction. Although everything indicated that the revolver belonged to Wild Bill, it was not 100% proven, but apparently, that was enough for the buyer who parted with $616,875 to purchase the revolver, a price that way exceeded the auction house’s estimated high price of $225,000. What we have in today’s edition of Wheelgun Wednesday is another Wild Bill Hickok revolver, a Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 Old Army, which is consigned to the upcoming August 2022 Rock Island Premier Firearms Auction. According to Rock Island Auction Company, this revolver is solidly documented as owned and carried by Wild Bill Hickok.
Wheelgun Wednesday: What We Love About Revolvers! What Do You Love?
Revolvers seem to be a controversial topic in the gun community, people either seem to love them or hate them, and perhaps there is a segment somewhere in the middle that looks at them historically. On this week’s Wheelgun Wednesday, I thought we’d take a peek at what we at TFB love about revolvers, and we certainly want to hear from our readers about what you love about revolvers as well.
Shooting a S&W Model 61 in Slow Motion
I recently picked up a S&W Model 61 thanks to my friend Paul. I did not know much about the pistol other than “it is the Taxi Driver sliding pistol”. I was intrigued by the lower bore axis and slide design. Of course, I had to film it in slow motion.
