Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and all of its different types of guns, shooting sports, ammunition, and history! Last week we took a look at CCI’s 22 CB 22-Shorts. These quiet little varmint-hunting cartridges were pretty popular centuries ago but today it seems that most people have adopted modern loads that can provide more power and better accuracy at more economical pricing. However, many of you in the comments noted that the Shorts are perfect for helping new shooters get acclimated to firearms, or great for some quiet and casual backyard plinking with something like a lever gun or single-shot rifle. This week we’re looking at a rifle that’s closer in age to the original 22 CB - the Savage/Stevens Model 87A also fondly known as a “Gill Gun.” Gill guns are a slightly broader category of firearm like you’ll see today, but we’ll primarily be focused on the Model 87A 22LR Semiautomatic rifle and its variants.

The firearms business is booming in all corners, and that includes your basic .22s. As a sign of the times, the Savage Arms rimfire plant in Canada is expanding in the coming months—and one of the reasons is that Savage needs the space to build new lever-action rifles. They’re also starting a centerfire production line in Canada.

I am back at the helm filling in for Luke C for this week. Last week Doug E had the Rimfire Report reins and dissected the Strange Beretta U22 NEOS Pistol. Today I thought it would be fun to talk about a firearm that’s been on my list for a long while. I of course am referring to the Savage 101 revolver…I mean pistol. Let’s dive right in!

Savage Arms is typically associated with high-quality but economically priced hunting rifles but at IWA 2024, they are unveiling a high-end collaborative ultra-lightweight rifle with participation from Proof Research and MDT. The rifle will use an MDT chassis with carbon fiber elements and a folding stock, a Proof Research carbon fiber-wrapped barrel, and Savage’s excellent trigger. It’s hard to believe that Savage is getting on board with high-end players like MDT and Proof, but it’s a welcome surprise, to be sure.

In today’s episode, we’re proud to have not only a representative of Savage Arms but also a representative of a rapidly growing market within the firearms industry – women who hunt! Beth Shimanski is an extremely accomplished hunter who has a load of experience within the hunting sphere of the firearms industry and today she shares with Pete some of her passions, what she likes about a hunting rifle and some of the things coming down the pipeline from Savage Arms in 2024. In addition to that, Beth and Pete also talk about the rapidly growing demographic of women who are now participating in hunting and shooting sports, and how she aspires to be a great ambassador for that and the Savage brand.

In this article, I am starting the year off right with a commentary article. Today we are covering the Savage 1907, America’s first mass-production double-stack handgun, its field strip, and common issues. Let’s dive into the very retro Art Deco double stack!

Savage has long been known for their extensive lineup of long guns for hunters, recreational, and precision shooters. Many of their firearms usually get paired with a bipod to make the entire rig more useful and that’s why Savage is proud to introduce the new Savage Bipod line. This new in-house line of Bipods from savage will come in both M-LOK and Swivel variants and weighs in at around 11 ounces keeping it night and lightweight like other polymer bipods. It also features simple-to-use controls and a bunch of other small features that make it perfect for those who like to get their rifles in the dirt and brush.

For a long time, Savage Arms built straight-shooting rifles at affordable prices, but lately, they’ve been adding a lot of options for hunters who appreciate the finer things of life. The latest entry along these lines is the KLYM rifle series. Intended for big game hunters on the move, the KLYM series adds modern materials to the long-running 110 platform as well as the newer straight-pull Impulse platform.

Savage just introduced a new model of the famed 110-series bolt action. The new  Trail Hunter features a Hogue Overmolded stock and a threaded medium contour barrel. Let’s see what other features it brings to the table. 

This new offering from Savage Arms in partnership with Winchester Ammunition is set to revolutionize hunting for straight-walled hunters across the country. The Savage rifles chambered in 400 Legend, will feature over a dozen models, and the cartridge itself boasts hard-hitting, yet mildly recoiling capabilities that promise to open up new opportunities for hunters in states where these cartridges are popular for legal reasons. Straight-walled cartridges have gained popularity for their performance in recent years, and the 400 Legend offers 100% more energy than a 12-gauge slug with 55% less felt recoil, making it an excellent choice for hunters in states like Ohio and Michigan. The 400 Legend is set to launch in 14 options, including the 110 Apex Hunter XP, 110 Hog Hunter, and Axis II XP, in time for the fall hunting season.

The Savage Impulse series of straight-pull rifles has won many awards and earned favorable reviews from its users since the series was introduced. Savage has announced the latest addition to the Impulse series, the new Savage Impulse Driven Hunter to meet the demands of fast-paced hunts specifically.

When Savage Arms announced their Impulse straight pull rifle, I was intrigued. The idea of a straight pull seems like it could be better than a traditional bolt action where you have to lift the bolt up before pulling it back. Well, Savage sent out their Impulse Big Game chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor for this review. So let’s take a closer look at it.

Anderson Manufacturing is a major producer of AR-15 parts and guns, but they had other things on display at SHOT Show as well.

This year at Shot Show Industry Day at the Range, Savage brought their new 1911 pistols in 3 different trims both with and without rails, and with Black Nitride, Stainless and two-tone schemes.  Savage Also brought out their new A22 takedown and their carbon barreled lightweight Impulse Mountain Hunter straight pull rifle.
