Last week we brought you a writeup on suppressing the new GLOCK 44 rimfire pistol – a setup I believe will be in every rimfire aficionados rotation.  This week we are going to run through some recent NFA news and then take a peak at my latest purchase – the H&K SP5. I’ve submitted my Form 1 application, payed my “tax” mailed my prints, ordered a stock and eagerly await the Crown’s blessing to shoulder my authentic German roller-delayed silencer host. Until then, we’ll have to play the SP5 vs MP5SD game as pistol versus short barreled rifle.

Good morning everyone and thank you for coming back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday. Today we dig into some additional decibel metering using the industry standard B&K 2209 on loan from  Allen Engineering for a few months. First we’ll do a brief overview of the Surefire Ryder 9Ti – a pistol suppressor that suprised me a bit with its performance since it has an outside diameter of only 1.25 inches. Then we will pit two of my favorite pistol caliber carbines against each other: the MP5SD versus APC9.

Over the past couple months there has been three separate announcements that include different models of silencers designed specifically for the MP5SD – an iconic roller delayed sub machine gun chambered in 9mm featuring a ported barrel for maximum suppression. This includes the just announced eight inch offering from TPM Outfitters.

Having previously shown some of the items that the Força Aérea Brasileira (Brazilian Air Force) ground elements currently pack for their ground work (http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017/06/23/brazilian-air-force-infantry-weapons/), it’s time, now, to see what their Marinha do Brasil (Brazilian Navy) counterparts employ. Most of the firearms, as expected, will be found in Navy-subordinated Corpo de Fuzileiros Navais (Marine Corps) hands, and these will be briefly covered here.

When one mentions an air force, what almost immediately probably comes to mind are images of sleek, fast-flying jet fighters, huge transport aircraft, and helicopters of all variations.  However, it should be remembered that a whole lot of equipment is involved in the general operation of a ‘flying’ armed service, infantry weapons included. From air base guard duties to a range of special operations (including C-SAR, Combat Search And Rescue, HR – Hostage Rescue, etc.), personnel of the ground elements must and do carry small (sometimes, not so) arms to accomplish their missions. The FAB – Força Aérea Brasileira (Brazilian Air Force) is no exception. So, here’s an illustrated report on some items likely to be found in their hands, most of the photos coming from official AF photographers, as shown by the embedded credits.

Due to the giant light/optic used on MP5s back in the day, I decided to modernize the concept a bit. If you recall I posted about the MP5 that TPM Outfitters have come across with an old Hensoldt light/optic. Well now that it is 20-30 years later we can certainly improve on the concept. I like to mount my Hellfighter on anything just because it is ridiculous and funny. I didn’t have the IR filter on for the photo but you can imagine it with one on.

Tom Bostic made this MP5SD for a friend. His friend already had an MP5SD in .40 cal so he wanted something a little different.

Agonizing over the extended wait time of the transfer of an  MP5SD from TPM Outfitters has been a test of patience. Although I am excited to write the review, the yearlong wait is painful. I know, I know – First World problems.

As I (im)patiently wait for ATF approval of my TPM Outfitters MP5-SD, I am already on the hunt for accessories and upgrades. I’m pretty familiar with the standard H&K collapsible stock, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best option out there. B&T has introduced a folding stock that is adjustable to four different lengths. The cheek weld options look promising, especially when you consider the optional riser that is available.

B&T from Switzerland is a relatively small but highly innovative company.

Atlantic Firearms has just announced the release of their Omega SD Barreled Receiver – basically the ‘heart and soul’ of an MP5SD patterned pistol. The receiver includes everything you need to own an SD roller-lock gun, minus the trigger group and an appropriate SD suppressor.

It has been awhile since we’ve shown the MP5SD any love. So, in case you missed our piece on the TP5SD from TPM Outifitters, who makes one of the best semiautomatic MP5SD variants on the market, here’s a nine-minute video from Machine Gun Mike on YouTube. In this basic but well thought out video, Mike explains the unique characteristics of the MP5SD submachine gun that allow it to shoot any type of  9 millimeter ammunition very quietly.

An interesting compatibility of parts. Brian B. built this cool SBR. First he started with just a SBR and a barrel extension. Then he got his preferred can. I was a bit confused as to how the MP5SD handguard was attached to the AR upper receiver.

Zenith Firearms has been successfully importing and selling MKE MP5 pistols for the past several years. Notice how I didn’t use the term “clone” or “patterned” when referring to the MKE? When talking with Michael Farruggio, Public Affairs Manager for Zenith, I was quickly corrected that the MKE guns are not HK “clones”: Farruggio refers to them as the “real deal” gun that comes from a HK factory line.
