POTD: Finnish Veteran Shoots Maxim Gun Again
At the beginning of January Ruotuvaki, Finland’s armed forces magazine published a story about Hannes Tuovinen, a veteran of the Continuation War, who was reunited with the Finish Maxim M/32-33 after 76 years. As an 18 year old Tuovinen had been trained to use the Maxim M/32-33 and fought during the Continuation War – a conflict separate from but fought concurrently to World War Two by Finland and Nazi Germany, as co-belligerents, against the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1944. The Continuation War began just over a year after the end of the 1940 Winter War.

The Eagle vs The Rising Sun: Early Machine Gun experiences from the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-5
The Liadong (Liaotung) Peninsula, China, 1904-5. The Russo-Japanese War. The Japanese are seeking to regain the use of Port Arthur and the Liadong Peninsula , given to them by the Treaty of Shimonoseki after the Sino-Japanese war. The First "Assault Weapon"? Forgotten Weapons and the Puckle Gun of 1718
The Puckle Gun is one of those firearms of which only a couple of examples exist in the world, but which is covered in a great deal of introductory firearms books, usually in their section on the history of machine guns.
Everyone needs to shoot a WW1 Water Cooled Belt Fed
This post is part of two others, about a recent range outing with some very historically interesting small arms, the DeLisle commando carbine, the M50 Reising submachine gun, and the Russian PM1910 Maxim heavy machine gun. All of these are NFA items (either Class III or suppressed) and the owner was extremely kind enough to take me out and blow over a thousand rounds through his small arms.
First Look: SilencerCo "Maxim 9" integrally suppressed pistol (VIDEO)
SilencerCo announced four new products, the first of which is an integrally suppressed 9mm pistol using Smith & Wesson’s M&P platform. There aren’t any specs available yet since this is an initial prototype, so we’ll have to wait and see what the final design looks like. The current design is futuristic and the Maxim could be available by the end of the year.
SilencerCo "MAXIM VICE" Product Announcement Event
Ever since last year’s notable Salvo 12 product announcement, my SilencerCo sources have been hyping up whatever will be announced on September 14th. I received an exclusive invitation in the mail which was a fun cardboard “TV” of sorts. TFB readers will hear all about it first on September 14th when I report out on site.
Gatling's Marvelous Gun
Need a primer on the original manually-cranked Gatling gun? Of course you do, or you know someone who does. The Historical Firearms blog has what you need, with a lengthy post covering in modest detail the operation and history of the gun, from its origins as an improved “coffee mill” gun to its maturation as the premier manually-operated metallic-cartridge firing proto-machine gun:
Guns & Ammo And The Maxim Silencer
We previously covered a James D. Julia auction for a Winchester 1894 lever-action rifle mounting a Maxim .30 caliber silencer. This unique firearm was sold as part of the March auction, but Guns & Ammo has answered the question many may have been asking while reading that article: “How effective, really, were Maxim silencers, and how do they compare to modern suppressor offerings?”
Winchester 1894 Levergun With Antique Silencer At James D. Julia
Forgotten Weapons’ Ian McCollum, partnering with James D. Julia auctions, has gotten the chance to take a look a very rare and historically significant piece: A Winchester 1894 takedown rifle made in 1907… With a registered Maxim silencer:
Mickey Mouse, His Friends, and Their Guns: Part 2
There was such positive interest around my first TFB write-up + video on this that I made a second one showing more German Disney comics that has Mickey and Friends touting their guns. In the preview screen of the video, it looks like Mickey’s got a Maxim gun.
