Night Optics USA, a Bushnell company, is now selling night vision adaptor kits for the iPhone 4/4s/5.  The new kits allow a user to use the video recording capabilities of the iPhone through a variety of night vision weapon sights and vision systems.

The Inteliscope is a picatinny mount for the iPhone which unlike, other phone picatinny mounts which we have blogged about before that mount a smartphone for use as a ballistic heads up display, allows the phone to be used as a digital scope.

US Night Vision manufacture a range of adapters to attached smartphones (Samsung Galaxy SIII, Motorola Bionic, iPhone) and iPads to rifle scopes, night vision systems or spotting scopes. An device adapter plugs into a scope adapter which then attaches to the optic. This system allows one device to be used with a range of different optics. Apple devices have the added benefit of being able to stream the video over AirPlay to an Apple TV.

As a gunsmith I sometimes find myself squinting at poorly scanned schematics of rare guns. Stumped halfway through a project, I scratch my head trying to figure out how the doohickey is held in place by the whatsit and what the doohickey’s function actually is in there. That’s probably why I think the free Gun Disassembly 2 app from Noble Empire is so cool. Available for iPhone, Android, Macs and PCs, the program is a wealth of knowledge about what is inside your favorite gun and how it actually works.

The developers of the Real Strike, an “3D Augmented Reality FPS Gun App”, sent us an email asking to have their app reviewed. I was intrigued so I paid the $2.99 it cost and downloaded the app. The app displays video from the iPhone/iPod/iPad rear camera and superimposes video game style guns. It was pretty nifty, for about two minutes. I had expected an app with the words “3D”, “Augmented Reality” and “FPS” to actually allow me to interact with an augmented reality like, for example, shoot virtual targets.

A Japanese company claims one of their iPhone cases, which is made from steel, can withstand a .50 BMG bullet.

Strike Industries make a cool iPhone case that features a quick pull loop (for those quick reloads) and an optional kevlar insert (for fun, not function) 🙂 It retails for just under $12.

The iPhone 4′s fancy microphones prevent shot timer software from working.
