POTD: Heckler & Koch HK416N and Norwegian Attack Dog
Welcome to TFB’s Photo Of The Day! Today’s selection features a lot of snow and cold, and a furry beast. In terms of firearms, we have the Heckler & Koch HK416N, the SA80 in full winter camouflage and most likely an M4 carbine.

POTD: H&K with Combined Joint Task Force in Al Asad Air Base, Iraq
The hungriest beast of them all on this blog is our Photo Of The Day. It consumes hundreds of images every month, and it has been doing so for over 9 years. Today we offer a bunch of images from the Al Asad Air Base, in Iraq. This military airbase is located in the western Iraqi province of Al Anbar. It is situated approximately 180 kilometers west of the capital city of Baghdad and 10 kilometers south of the town of Baghdadi. The airbase is named after the nearby town of Al Asad.
POTD: FN Minimi (M249 SAW) in Norway
Norway’s Armed Forces have been using the FN Minimi Light Machine Gun (in 5,56×45 NATO) since the late 80s. Recently they awarded FN Herstal another contract to supply up to 4,000 FN Minimi 7.62 Mk3 Light Machine Guns, a movement up in caliber as you can see. In this Photo Of The Day, we see the Telemark Battalion conducting a live-fire exercise with various firearms of the Norwegian Army.
POTD: Snipers from Norwegian Telemark Battalion in Oslo
Photojournalism is the process of telling stories using the medium of photography as your main storytelling device. While a journalist will use their pen and paper to tell stories, a photojournalist will use their camera to capture the visual representation of a story. The photographer Torbjørn Kjosvold from the Norwegian Defence does a great job at this. In this Photo Of The Day, we have snipers from the Norwegian Telemark Battalion during an exercise in Oslo. There isn’t much information about what’s going on, but I think the photos are quite telling anyway?
POTD: Norwegian FN Minimi in Bamako, Mali
A Norwegian soldier with the FN Minimi in Bamako, Mali. One of the purposes of TFB’s Photo Of The Day is to broaden the audience for the excellent work done by professionals in combat photography. A perfect picture may take everything from a split second to months of planning, and it would be sad to see that kind of work go unnoticed.
POTD: Royal Norwegian Air Force 339 Squadron
Some use reindeer and some use K9 Belgian Malinois to travel in the snow. In our Photo Of The Day, we have Norwegian Coastal Rangers conducting an air mobile operation together with the Royal Norwegian Air Force 339 Squadron. This happened during exercise Arctic Hawk in Northern Norway. Apart from the dog, you can see weapons like the Heckler & Koch HK416N and the FN Minimi.
POTD: HK416N with Grenade Launcher in front of Royal Norwegian Air Force F-35A
Photo Of The Day and we have a guard ahead of the F-35A aircraft from the Royal Norwegian Air Force at Evenes Air Base during exercise Falcon Deploy 2021. The F-35A is a single-seat, single-engine, stealth, fifth-generation, multi-role combat aircraft ordered by several NATO allies. The Heckler & Koch HK416N has a AG-HK416 Grenade Launcher.
POTD: Exercise Arctic Specialist
In today’s Photo Of The Day, we have some photos of Norwegian Navy EODs, US Navy EODs Mobile Unit 8, and Danish Navy EODs training together with the Norwegian Army and Air Force during the Exercise Arctic Specialist. Above you can see some Heckler & Koch HK416s working together from an inflatable boat. Below there’s a heavy Machine Gun.
POTD: Heckler & Koch and Low-flying F-35A Fighter Jet
Photo Of The Day: In 2008 the Norwegian government selected the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter) as a replacement for their fleet of F-16s. Almost ten years after, in 2017, the first aircraft arrived at the Ørland Air Base and this is still the main base. In 2020 The Royal Norwegian Air Force conducted their first international deployment with the F-35 during NATO Air Policing missions in Iceland. Norway has seven F35s operational with a total of 52 planned.
POTD: His Majesty The King's Guard with HK416N
Photo Of The Day: Soldier from His Majesty The King’s Guard standing in front of the Storting, the Norwegian Parlament, during the opening of the 166:th Storting. They are carrying the Heckler & Koch HK416N with Aimpoint sights, made for Norway. It seems they are using a shorter magazine than the regular army, and it looks like the outside of the barrel most likely got more cleaning than the inside.
POTD: The Norwegian Engineering Team
The Norwegian Army and their Home Guard must be among the most well-equipped armies and forces in the world, and they have plenty of good combat photographers as well. It’s only natural that we see them quite often in TFB’s Photo Of The Day.
