Photo Of The Day: Above you see (well, kind of) an Australian Army soldier from the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. He patrols through bushland during a simulated reconnaissance operation during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise. From June 29 to August 4, 26 countries, 38 ships, four submarines, more than 170 aircraft, and 25,000 people will take part in RIMPAC in and near the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. Thales EF88 Completes First Operational Deployment

The Thales EF88 assault rifle has seen its first operational deployment, and the reception is reportedly very warm. According to an article in Defence Connect, the rifles were deployed with Task Group Taji 5 (5th rotation), a battalion of Australian Defence Force advisers for Iraqi forces deployed as part of Operation Okra. Lithgow Arms Thales F90

Here is a new video of the Australian Lithgow Arms F90. As you can see, it is based on the Steyr design. I think the video producer/director took some cues from Instructor Zero with the spinning around and shooting balloons. I do question the lack of eye protection for the shooter.

Australian Army Fielding F90 (EF88) For Trials

The Australian Army’s program to produce a successor to the F88 “Austeyr” is on the verge of bearing fruit. Army.gov.au reports that the F90, formerly designated “EF88” is now being issued for trials, in preparation for final modifications and production. The F90 is a lighter, more modular system that fixes many of the flaws of the original Steyr AUG design:
