Now Available: The Palmetto State Armory 5.7 Rock Pistol

Once upon a time 5.7x28mm was only chambered by two guns: the FN PS90 and the FN 5.7, a very niche round if there ever was one. Eventually, AR uppers were introduced, and Ruger introduced their 57 pistol. This of course broadened the market and made it easier and more affordable for anyone to own a firearm in the blistering little cartridge. Now after introducing it at SHOT Show 2022, Palmetto State Armory has finally released the 5.7 Rock pistol to the market at a rather affordable price of $499.

TFB Collab: FN P90 with 1911 Syndicate

Introduced in 1990, the FN P90 is a select-fire personal defense weapon (PDW) designed to defeat body armor.  Designed to be a replacement for 9mm chambered firearms, this requirement yielded an entirely new weapons system.  The P90 uses a top-loading 50 round standard capacity magazine and is chambered in 5.7x28mm. To see just how well this weapons system had aged, I headed out to the desert with Jake and Chris from 1911 Syndicate to put the P90 through its paces.

Ruger Issues Safety Bulletin for Ruger-57 Pistols

When the Ruger-57 burst onto the scene in late 2019, it made quite a splash. For around two decades, there were very few models of firearms using the 5.7x28mm cartridge – chiefly just FN’s own P90 and Five-seveN variants, which were developed starting in the late ’90s in conjunction with the round. Though a handful of other manufacturers have added support over the years, the pickings have remained relatively slim. It makes sense, then, that Ruger‘s release of a 5.7-caliber handgun priced significantly lower than FN’s option (a $799 MSRP versus $1199) got people excited. It was well-received, and both TFB’s and TFBTV’s reviewers had positive things to say about it. For those readers who have them, we hope you enjoy them, but be warned: a safety issue has been discovered. See the following bulletin from Ruger regarding a potential problem with the manual safety lever.

Thirty-five years after it was invented, the 5.7x28mm caliber is now standardized by NATO. Two other NATO calibers are the 9x19mm NATO and the 12.7x99mm NATO. The main use for the 5.7x28mm is for handguns and Personal Defense Weapons (PDW) like the FN P90.
