Steyr Mannlicher attended IDEX with a somehow low profile booth in the Austrian pavilion. In the small space, they managed, however, to showcase a good selection of their products, from the new A2 pistol in different configurations to the impressive HS50 anti-materiel rifle.

[SHOT 2019] Hands on with Gear Head Works' ONE pistol in .300BLK

On my way down to link up with the good folks at OSS Suppressors, I noticed a very awesome little bolt action pistol on one of their tables: Gear Head Works much anticipated ONE pistol in .300 Blk.  I gave the firearm a good looking over, and the fit and finish are excellent.  Gear Head has been working hard on refining this firearm to sub-MOA specs.  Everything from the side folding brace to the chassis to the bolt and trigger felt extremely polished and well made.  Keep in mind this is after 5 hours of being shot and knocked around by hordes of media and buyers attending Industry Day at the Range.

NEW: Sierra Bullets .300 AAC Blackout Reloading Data

Many AR-15 enthusiasts and hunters have a strong appreciation for .300 AAC Blackout because of its versatility and available grain weight range. It has very similar ballistics to a traditional AK-47 chambered for 7.62x39mm ( .300 AAC Blackout is 7.62x35mm metrically), but you have the popular American platform of an AR-15.

Unsafe Cartridge Combination You Never Thought About

Have you ever thought that 7.62x39mm and .243 Winchester can be a pair of cartridges that are dangerous if mixed? Of course, any cartridge is dangerous if not used in a gun it is chambered for and nobody should do it. However, there are some pairs of cartridges known for causing catastrophic failures if mixed.

POTD: .300BLK SIG MCX Pistol

Looks like SB Tactical is making a new collapsing brace for the Sig MCX rifles. From what I have read online, the collapsing MPX brace is not compatible with the MCX. If you look at the photo above, the adapter that attaches the sliding bars to the MCX receiver is different than on the MPX.

.300 AAC gel test: Sig 120 gr HT solid copper bullet

The .300 AAC Blackout has enjoyed wild popularity over the last few years. Its subsonic performance is a big part of the marketing appeal, but there is little practical need for subsonic ammunition for most users. Subsonic ammo, no matter how cool, is still subsonic. At least so far as terminal effect is concered, 220 gr subsonic .300 AAC is no better than .45 Auto. In some ways, .45 Auto is better since there are projectiles for it that will actually expand when fired through heavy clothing. Now, before someone accuses me of saying that subsonic .300 AAC is useless or pulls out the worn out rejoinder of “I dare you to let me shoot ya with it,” I need to point out that no, it isn’t totally useless. Some folks have found it particularly well suited to discrete pest control and hunting. And no, I don’t want to be shot with it. I don’t want to be shot with a slingshot, either, but that doesn’t make it suitable for defense. Hey, subsonic .300 AAC is still fun. It’s okay to like it. Just because it isn’t practical doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it.

Rifle Ammunition and Soft Body Armor

You are probably well aware that even the very best soft armor is no help against rifle ammunition. Even relatively slow cartridges like 7.62x39mm and .300 AAC can still easily slice right through level IIIA armor. But what if several panels were layered on top of each other? Would it be enough to stop a rifle bullet? That is to say, obviously if you have enough layers of Kevlar you can stop any bullet but can you do it without looking like Ralphie’s brother in “A Christmas Story”? What if the shooter was far enough away? At some distance, it certainly could. At some distance, a cotton T-shirt could stop a bullet, but is it possible for a reasonable amount of soft armor to stop a rifle bullet at a speed that we can all agree is still truly a rifle bullet? To answer that question as definitively as is feasible, we shot a stack of four armor panels with a relatively slow .300 AAC load.

POTD: Informative .300 BLK Cutaway

Here is a photo showing how .300blk can be chambered in a .223 chamber. We have seen many examples of the aftermath of this scenario once the shooter pulls the trigger. This cut away shows how there is enough room for the cartridge to be chambered. Just like safe firearms discipline one should pay attention to what ammo is going into the gun. Perhaps this image may help explain it to you or someone you know.

DDM4ISR: The New Integrally Suppressed Rifle From Daniel Defense

As a lover of all things quiet, I realize the significance of .300BLK. A heavy, subsonic round that can be easily adopted into the most popular semiautomatic rifle system in the country, if not the world? Awesome. However, I have yet to find an application for .300BLK that works for me. Well, the new Daniel Defense DDM4ISR is pushing me ever closer to the dark side.

POTD: NFA Snafu At Cabela's

Measure twice cut once. Well in the case of selling firearms you should probably measure a few more times and understand ATF NFA guidelines of what constitutes an SBR. Josh P. saw this at a local Cabela’s. The store purchased a used Remington 700 chambered in .300blk and it has a 15″ barrel. Josh brought this to their attention and they are looking into it.  If they had sold it obviously the customer would be in possession of an unregistered SBR. But what ramifications would the FFL receive?
