This is a review of the Pulsar Merger LRF XL50 High Definition Thermal Binoculars. High definition thermals for commercial use started appearing last year, and in 2024 we will see more and more of them. This review is TFB’s second on the subject of HD thermals, and my first. The device reviewed here is a private purchase, and it’s been my companion since the spring of 2023. After almost 10 months of ownership, it’s time to conclude what I’ve discovered.

Pulsar's New Compact Thermal Imaging Binoculars – Merger LRF XQ35

Pulsar have a long history with Thermal Imaging Binoculars, with models like the Accolade and the Merger – all reviewed by TFB of course. It’s now time for a more compact Merger, called the Merger LRF XQ35, which has a lot of features to become a perfect companion for hunters and rescue workers. The new, compact Merger uses a European-made thermal sensor, with 384×288 pixels @ 17 µm and a sensitivity of < 25 mK NETD. Apart from the thermal capability, there is also an integrated Laser Range Finder which is said to reach out to 1 kilometer.

Did you ever put All The Money In One Picture? Well here’s a try. The rifle is a Tikka T3x TAC A1 in 6.5 Creedmoor, in a Spuhr SICS chassis painted in a custom Snigel Grey Cerakote. The barrel is suppressed by Ase Utra with a QD mount. Balancing on top we have a Safran Vectronix PLRF25 Laser Range Finder, Pulsar Merger Thermal Binoculars and another Vectronix Terrapin X. The wind meter is from Kestrel.

This is a review of the Pulsar Merger LRF XP50 Thermal Binoculars. The closest thing we’ve ever had a look at here is the almost three-year-old review of the Pulsar Accolade 2 LRF XP50, and things have certainly moved on during that time. Apart from one thing, everything has been improved!
