POTD: Freak Show Prone Shooting Position
I found this photo on US Army WTF! Moments Facebook page. This soldier is using an unorthodox shooting position. Yes that is a female soldier and please keep your comments clean and appropriate. The position is apparently called Freak Show Prone and was created by Pat McNamara
New MidwayUSA Shooting Mat
If there’s one thing you find you really do need a part of your kit if you’re a dedicated rifle shooter, it’s a shooting mat. Although there’s nothing wrong with getting down on the grass, in the dirt, and over the admittedly jagged edges of rocks, there are reasons beyond comfort for having a well-made mat. For example, some guns – especially those of greater weight – have bipods that will sink right into the dirt. It’s hard – no, impossible – to stay on target when your bipod is constantly behaving as though it’s resting atop quicksand. Now there’s a new shooting mat out from MidwayUSA designed to meet a variety of needs.
Off Axis Shooting
Aaron Cowan of Sage Dynamics discusses and shows a slight variation of off axis shooting. I usually see off axis shooting in 3Gun competitions where the shooter has an angled sight zeroed differently than his or her main sight. This way you can stay zoomed in for longer range targets and rapid transition to the angle sights for close range targets.
Another Important Training Lesson
Last Friday, social media was a frenzy with this gem. It is another “worst tactical training video”. Dallas Lloyd of Premier Tactical Group posted a video of what he thinks people should do when caught in “some weirdo crossfire”. That solution? You should get out of your vehicle to engage the threat. He does not mention the obvious choice, which is to just drive away.
Water Grenades as Muzzle Protectors
Rifleslinger of Art Of The Rifle has discovered an interesting practical shooting tip: Covering the muzzle of a firearm with a “water grenade” (olive drab colored balloon made to resemble a pineapple grenade when inflated) to prevent dirt or other debris from clogging the bore or harming the crown. His experiments with this method suggest the balloon can be shot off without disturbing the accuracy of the shot:
