Barrett Firearms Awarded $50 Million Contract for US Army's Precision Sniper Rifle
The US Army has confirmed its procurement of Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc.’s MK22 Multi-role Adaptive Design (MRAD) rifle as the Precision Sniper Rifle. The $50 million five year contract will see just short of 3,000 MRADs procured. It has not been specified which calibre will be the primary chambering of the Army’s new sniper rifles but the Army’s announcement does mention the MRAD’s ability to switch between .338 Norma Magnum, .300 Norma Magnum and 7.62×51 NATO.
Leupold Mark 5HD Selected by Army Precision Sniper Rifle Program
The Army’s Precision Sniper Rifle program began as a survey in 2008 that was eventually awarded to Remington in 2013, with their Mk 21 MSR (Modular Sniper Rifle) and Later the Mk 22 ASR. Recently, the United States Army has selected the Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 scope for use in the Precision Sniper Rifle Program.
Marine Corps Confirms Adoption of Mk 13 Sniper Rifle
Back in April TFB reported that the USMC was finally moving to replace the venerable M40 Sniper Rifle. The Corps has confirmed this in a press release announcing the adoption of the Mk 13 Precision Sniper Rifle which will replace the M40A6 currently in service.
Remington MSR: The Special Forces MK 21 Sniper Rifle
In 2009 the Precision Sniper Rifle program gave birth to the Remington MSR, a modular sniper rifle that was capable of getting good hit out to 1500 meters. The Remington MSR won the Precision Sniper Rifle competition and became the Mark 21 sniper rifle that was adopted by the US Special Forces as well as special forces units in Brazil and Columbia.
