[SHOT 2016] Colt's CK901 7.62×39 AR To Come To Civilian Market
In 2014, Colt announced a new variant of its CM901 line of convertible 7.62×51/5.56×45 AR-pattern rifles, the CK901. Designed for orders coming from the Middle East and other areas where AKs are plentiful, the CK901 feeds from existing surplus AK magazines, while – in the paraphrased words of the Colt representative I spoke to – “introducing that market to the AR platform without disturbing what they’re used to”.
[SHOT 2016] Media Day at the range: Hands-On at CMMG
At media range day, I headed over to CMMG to see what all the noise was about. I had been shooting a few bays over, when some very loud automatic fire caught my attention. It was the 10″ barreled Mutant (MK47 K), their AK-47 magazine compatible rifle, with a 10″ upper and their .30cal SV brake, as well as as an upper that had their new Krinkov-style brake attached. After a break for setting up targets and oiling the bolts (they had been fired constantly for 2 hours at that point), It was my turn to have a go.
CMMG Mutant; California Compliant Version
Originally I was supposed to get the CMMG Mutant MK47 AKM in time to simultaneous publish with the other Mutant article we ran, but apparently there was a problem sourcing the component (i.e. “bullet button”) to make it “California Compliant”.
CMMG Announces New Mutant Models, The Mutant SBR, Mutant California Compliant Version And The Pistol TFB Just Reviewed
As you readers know Patrick just wrote a review of the new CMMG Mutant pistol. The other models which include the SBR with a 10 inch barrel as well as a California Compliant model. This is sure good news for those living in California. Heaven only knows what hoops they had to jump through to accomplish that!
Gun Review: A TFB Exclusive, The New CMMG MK47 K Mutant Pistol
A while back Alex C. and I reviewed the CMMG Mutant rifle for TFB. We were rather impressed with what CMMG was able to achieve that the second that we heard about the CMMG Mutant pistol I jumped at the chance to review it. After getting word back to my editor I would love to review it CMMG shipped the new CMMG MK47 K Mutant pistol out quickly. CMMG will have a press release out Monday officially announcing to the rest of the world this new Mutant pistol.
CMMG Mutant 1,000 Round Follow-Up Test
After sending his MK 47 Mutant back to the manufacturer following its failure in a previous 1,000 round shooting session, Mrgunsngear has gotten the rifle back from CMMG, with a new locking compound applied to the gas block. Naturally, it’s time for another 1,000 round test, to see how the new setup holds up:
MK 47 Mutant Torture Test
We’ve posted a couple of times about the interesting CMMG MK 47 Mutant, which mates an AR-style operating mechanism to an intermediate-length upper receiver and a lower receiver that takes AK magazines. The marriage of the AR-15’s direct impingement operating mechanism and the 7.62×39 round is an interesting one, and many may be curious how those two perform together in an extended firing session (such as a carbine course). Mrgunsngear has obliged us with an (attempted) 1,000 round-count firing session with the Mutant.
CMMG Has Begun Shipping MK47 Mutants
According to a press release, CMMG has begun shipping MK 47 Mutant rifles to “select stores”:
CMMG Mk. 47 Mutant Pricing And Details
Our own Alex C has already posted a thorough review of the new CMMG dedicated 7.62×39 AR-15, so be sure to go check that out. Meanwhile, CMMG has released model and pricing details, through a press release:
Review: The New CMMG MK47 Mutant
AR or AK? That argument has been beaten to death over decades and past attempts to convert AR15s to 7.62×39 have resulted in magazine issues or bolt failures due to the milling of the bolt face. People have tried to bring to market AR lowers that accept AK mags in the past, but they have always seemed to be vaporware or produced by small manufacturers with a very limited capacity to produce.
