Every year the Singaporean Armed Forces hosts an Army Open House to allow the public to interact with various components of the military. This is similar to numerous other open houses across the world in which militaries display their wares and showcase abilities. However, Singapore is somewhat of a special case because the country is so small, that essentially a good portion of the entire country can get some hands on time with much of what the military has to offer, in one setting. For this year’s Open House, Shepard Media was quick to point out numerous advances in the military’s Special Operations Task Force (SOTF) armament. Specifically identifiable was the addition of Heckler & Koch 4.6mm MP7A1s, and 5.56x45mm NATO HK416s with the SOFT assaulters.  FN Herstal P90s were also present, but these appeared to be regulated to a lesser used role than the MP7A1s. Elcan variable optics and Trijicon RMRs were mounted to the weapons, and a Steiner eOptics CQBL-1 mounted at the 12 o’clock position of some of the weapon systems. Helmet mounted NVGs appear to be one of the MINIE series from Thales Group Angenieux, and a surprising appearance of a MOHOC  helmet-mounted camera system, specfically designed for military operations. Independant Studio Service s aka ISS Weapons posted a picture of a rare MP7 Deployment briefcase. I have not found any information on this if it is an actual H&K product like the original MP5K briefcase which you can see Rusty’s lightning review here. The MP5K briefcase was designed to fire the MP5K while it was concealed within the briefcase. The handle was fixed and had a trigger linked to some linkages that would actuate the MP5K trigger.

While we were at SHOT James, Steve, and I felt it was a good idea to take our camera crew to Battlefield Vegas. After all, this is the only place in town that can really excite the discerning gun nerd after a week at the world’s largest gun expo. If you were going to loose your gun virginity all over again, wouldn’t you want it to be with a super model? I mean, it’s an MP7 for your first range experience!

If the 5.7x28mm FN is the first successful modern PDW round, then the 4.6x30mm HK is the second, and its biggest rival. German firm Heckler and developed the microcaliber 4.6mm in the 1990s as a response to a NATO solicitation for a Personal Defense Weapon, to which they submitted their new HK PDW (later MP7) chambered for the new round.

A huge thanks to my buddy Alex of SB Tactical for bringing this down upon my request. The HK MP7 is a gun that is relegated to almost Sasquatch level of existence. There are very few out there in the US and even fewer people have seen them in person let alone fired one. Sure there are airsoft versions of the H&K MP7 and your occasional online personality has had trigger time with them like SMG Lee and Larry Vickers. So you can imagine my excitement getting to handle this little PDW.

Though rare in the wild, mostly seeing use with special units and some police departments, is a favorite of Hollywood movie-makers and Triple-A video game developers, thanks to its compact size, striking looks, and fully automatic firepower. The gun itself, however, was originally intended to be an inexpensive, compact, and unobtrusive weapon that would be better for troops far from the front, the MP7 eventually became a weapon more commonly associated with the tip of the spear, direct action teams, and SWAT officers.
