Firearms that once belonged to the famous American exhibition shooter Annie Oakley have always been some of the most sought after items highly valued by collectors. And Little Miss Sure Shot’s  Stevens Model 44 rifle that was consigned to May 2020 Morphy Extraordinary, Sporting, & Collector Firearms auction, is no exception. This engraved and gold plated single-shot rifle was sold for $528,900 becoming the most expensive lot sold during the May 2020 Morphy auction.

POTD: Percussion Pistol Used for Starting Sailboat Races

While browsing the catalog of the upcoming September 2019 Morphy Field & Range Firearms Auction catalog, I came across this rather weird old percussion pistol. According to the description of the lot, this pistol was used as a sailboat race starter. I suppose the large bell-shaped cup attached to the muzzle is designed to amplify the report or guide it to a certain direction so that everyone will hear the start of the race.
