Brigham Young University has taken a unique approach to solving a problem for law enforcement. Many departments seek to have protective barriers or shields available in their vehicles. Many are too heavy, too cumbersome, or flat out do not work. BYU has applied the principles of origami to make something truly original.

This video is apparently sweeping the interwebs at the moment. From a number of captions so far, we see this labeled as an “FBI Alaska SWAT team” and attributing this to the FBI Alaska field office. The only thing that I am sure of, is that this is a law enforcement branch of some entity, within the United States. Whether or not this is an FBI operation or a a local SWAT operation, I can’t tell at the present time. When more information comes out I’m sure we’ll have a better picture of who and where these guys are. Anyways, kick back, and watch how not to go about making entry, or endangering the lives of your teammates.

It’s a fantastic endorsement for any optics line, and it’s being given to SIG SAUER Electro-Optics: the Fort Collins, Colorado Police Department has chosen the company’s ROMEO4 for use on their duty weapons. SIG SAUER officially launched their Electro-Optics line at SHOT Show 2016 starting with a hands-on look at the optics at the start of that week during their invitation-only event during Industry Day at the Range. Having attended the event myself and also having had other opportunities with the optics I can attest to the fact that SIG SAUER made a solid leap into the optics world – something  the gun world at large is well aware of at this point.

News from IWA 2016, Lithgow Arms, the small arms division of Australian defense conglomerate Thales, and former government arsenal, has announced that they will be offering a semiautomatic version of their F90 military rifle for the law enforcement/police market, as a patrol rifle. The F90 was developed by Thales to replace the AUG F88 Austeyr bullpup rifle, upon which it is based.

Recently, the SOF WPMO at NSWC Crane has issued a warning about EOTech optics, saying that they experience problems with temperature sensitivity and shifting zero. SoldierSystems.net reports (only a portion of the article is duplicated below, please click through and read the whole thing):

As their press release implies: Hogue has finally gotten around to releasing a laser grip for 1911’s. Don’t get me wrong, Crimson Trace makes some great stuff, but Hogue just feels natural in the hand to me (played paintball with them on an Autococker still to this day). As such, I welcome the news.

An article posted by the Los Angeles Times has come out with a review of the increase in accidental discharges by Los Angels County Sheriff deputies, saying it doubled since 2012 when the agency switched over from Beretta 92Fs to the Smith & Wesson M&P. The article has alot of typical firearms terminology errors, such as calling an accidental discharge a “misfire”. Nonetheless, the department is officially saying that they are blaming the new pistols and the lack of training involved for the trend in negligent discharges.

Glock handguns used by the police department of the Kentucky city of Bardstown have developed serious cracks after more than 15 years of duty. WDRB 41 Louisville News covered the issues in a segment available online, saying the issues affected a dozen handguns – about half of those issued to the Department. The guns were purchased in 2000, and have seen heavy use since then, leading to the cracks that in some cases caused the guns to disassemble. The firearms are chambered in the .40 S&W caliber, and that – combined with a decade and a half of training that could include the duty handgun being fired in an officer’s off-time practice, caused hairline cracks in the guns’ slides, causing failures of the slide to lock back, and in at least one case spontaneous disassembly.
