Last year, we published an article about the prototype guns seen at SHOT Show 2022 one of which was the 5.56 Gun concept by JL Billet. Well, the company has been working on refining the design of the gun during the year and they brought several pre-production samples to SHOT Show 2023.

JL Billet has developed an AR-15 charging handle that turns the semi-auto AR-15 pattern rifles into a straight pull bolt action rifles. This accessory is called Kali-Key. It is primarily designed for the states with restrictive gun laws.

Normally, when we writers are sent something for review we just mount it on the first available gun, do our shooting, and often enough, the part gets relegated to an ever-increasing parts bin until we are able to build the next franken-gun. Never before have I been inspired to build a gun around a part until sent the JL Billet MLOK Handguard.

While symptomatic for some time, I caught the competitive shooting bug badly last year. 3-gun started with a bone-stock ACR and has worked its way into a fully-fledged tuned AR-15 with nothing but competition-oriented parts. Alas, I have never been able to find a great muzzle device for the guns. The choices were either too heavy, bulky, loud, or drove the muzzle down on a shooter with proper posture.
